Molens in Noord-Holland

Zij stelde mij twee vragen in haar laatste commentaar namelijk:

"You live in a very beautiful place, I am really fascinated by the windmill. Are they homes too? What are they used for?"

(Accept my translation errors and omissions, please)

I will try to answer Faye's questions as good as I can. She asked me two questions in her last comment namely:

"You live in a very beautiful place, I am really fascinated by the windmill. Are they homes too? What are they used for?"

The answer on the first question is: "Yes, sometimes after rebuilding, mills will be used as a house." And the answer on the second question is: "Windmills were previously used for many purposes such as to drain the water from the polder land, but also to grind grain to flour or, to saw trees to planks and for many other works. In the Dutch polders, the mills were used mainly to keep the polders dry and to lead off the surplus of water. The mills had and still have a number with which they are indicated."

(For those of you who don't know what a polder is. A polder is land below sea level, land withdrawn from the sea, surrounded and protected by dikes. Now the name The Netherlands mean something to you?)

These questions brought me on the idea to seek in our neighbourhood for a few windmills and then to photograph them. When you live so close to something like windmills then you don't see them as something special. There are dozens of mills here and we got used to them as something normal in the landscape. Usually you see the mills somewhere far away in the landscape and to get there you have to leave the highways and choose for the rural roads.

This polder windmill stands in the municipality Zijpe, of which Callantsoog is also a part. From the provincial road you see it in the distance, but to get there you have to choose the narrow road that lead you directly to the mill.

Sometimes become mills inhabited, but it depends on for which purposes the mill was built. In one case there is next to the mill a small house, while in another case there is space created in the mill to live in. Presently, where old mills are renovated and sometimes organized as a house, are on the other hand old windmills seen as valuable inheritance and considered as a monument. Only all these cases can differ very much.

The up here shown mill is an inhabited polder mill and what a polder mill is has been described in the paper below.

This mill stands far way in the the polder landscape and although I already knew, that it was not possible to come close by I approached as close as possible being able to see a little bit more of the mill.

I could not come closer. The narrow path that led to the windmill was blocked by a horse!... The beautiful animal looked kindly at me and she approached to see what I had in mind, I decided to remain behind the fence that was placed before the narrow path. It was clear, this was private ground, and not accessible for public.

Only with a zoom lens I could come closer to the mill and then this is the result.

This mill called "Leonide" lies nearby the village Anna Paulowna. From the parking space by the provincial road you have a nice view over the water on the large mill. And also here I can say, many times I passed this spot, saw the mill standing there, but never took the opportunity to have better look at it. Due to the interest of Faye, who lives so far from here in a cold part of Canada, I decided again to take the small road to this mill for a better look and to take a few photographs.

The mill has been built in 2002 on the same spot where previously also stood a mill. This new mill is inhabited by the family De Leeuw (The Lion). It is a particular specimen, you may think the mill has been built on top the house. I was told, that the old original mill was a sawing mill. The wood was lead into in the sawing mill on the left side, came under the mill and was sawn, and on the right side the boards came out the building again. This is about what was explained to me. Nowadays the new mill does not work any longer, but became exclusive to use as a house

Everything looks quiet and nicely and it must be a very nice experience to live in such a beautiful mill. The family De Leeuw got attention enough for their mill. Several cars stopped here, most of the time German tourists, to have a better view on the mill or to make photographs.

The windows and hatches makes you think at previously, so it must have been in the old days. The bright colours over the dark background are quite beautiful.

From the place where the mill stands the inhabitants have an unique view over the water. The spot is so quiet and is only a few hundred meters from the provincial road, from where you can go in all directions.

Then yet closer to Callantsoog, in the surroundings of the village called 't Zand (the Sand), I saw a few mills in the polder landscape. And then at the narrow path that led to the first mill, I saw this sign and I knew that I was on the right path. It was not only an indication how to reach the mill, but it was also an indication that there had been placed a monument. A monument to remember the 36 Dutchmen who lost their lives during the Tsunamie disaster in Asia on 26 December 2004. I certainly wanted to have a look at this place, because I was not aware of the existence of this monument.

Lost, in a beautiful rural surroundings, I saw this house and the windmill, from which I gladly wanted to take a few photographs, and also from the place where the monument was.

Near the house I parked my car and firstly I took some time to look around and to find out what the monument had to tell. There was also a small room at one side of the house in which you could sit to read some information and to sign a guest book. In a leaflet was explained what the monument was meant to be and by whom it has been made.

Here I will quote the leaflet:

'The monument consists of a three meter long wave, sculptured in Belgian hard stone, laid in a large circle of shells sand. On the wave, stands the text: "A wave comes and goes and leaves behind everything changed." Around this large stone lie 36 small erratic blocks, differing in form and colour and polished by the water. On every stone is the name of one of the 36 victims. The wave is of the hand of Saskia Koning (Saskia King)".

I rang the doorbell at the house and the inhabbitant of this beautiful house, a friendly lady opened the door. I asked for permission to walk over the grounds in the direction of the mill. That was not a problem at all. I could walk all over the place to take photos. It is a powerful sight to stand so close under such a huge mill. It gives a good impression of the enormous power that can be developed by wind in the vanes.

Behind the mill, there was this rustic spot. Ditches through which the surplus of water in the polder is transported when that is necessarily.

With this tool, the passage of water to the ditch can be regulated to the mill. The water can be let through, or stopped by a board.

Seen from the front, it is really a beautiful sight, and also particular when you're so nearby and can walk along the vanes.

This mill stands at the Parallelweg along the Rijksweg N9, nearby the village St. Maartensvlotbrug. Also one of the villages in our municipality the Zijpe.

It can be of interest to download the above photograph to your own PC and to enlarge the text to make it more readable. You can find a lot of information about the mill and its funktion. The mill is property of the "Foundation De Zijper Mills".

The mill dates from probably 1650 and has been restored several times, through which it still works.

With this long story I hope I have passed on some information about a few mills I found here in our municipality, and nearby where I live. There are much more mills here, but to name them all would mean that I start to repeat myself and that works in the opposite direction. On the spot where I parked my car I looked behind me in the mirror and went back home where the coffee was waiting for me, I could smell it in the car.
