Den Haag - The Hague

Dinsdag 3 juni 2008.

(translation errors and omissions accepted by you)

Tuesday, June 3, 2008.

It has been a long time ago that I was in The Hague. I planned earlier to visit the city after so many years. I had still a free train travel on my subscription and the period to make use of the free travel had almost gone, a beautiful occasion to make the free trip to The Hague. Thus, I went by car to the railroad station and took the train to The Hague. I planned to make a walk around some places such as the Plein, Binnenhof and Buitenhof , and to examine everything around there. I only did not know how to get there.

But there are information counters in the station hall where you can ask questions and they provide you with all the information you need to find your way in the City. I could reach all places by foot from the Central Station to where I wanted to go. And besides, walking is healthy, even in smattering rain.

The woman behind the desk explained to me in which direction I had to go, I left the large station hall and walked out into the rain.

Outside the building I saw an enormous quantity bicycles in front of the building. Obviously parked there by people who prefer to travel comfortably by train instead of driving their own car, an easy way to avoid stress. From home by bicycle to the train and then by train to their job and vise versa. We become wiser under some circumstances, I think. Cars are kept away from downtown as much as possible, nevertheless when you need to be there, it costs a lot of parking money, travelling time, waiting time and irritation. Long live public transportations!

The Hague has always been an international city and still is. The offices and government buildings proof that. One can wonder what happens there in all those huge buildings where so many people are brought together. The new buildings are in my view of a superb architecture, but there will be undoubtedly other people who have a different view, so it is always.

Underway to my destination stood on important junctions direction indicators. Therefore you cannot actually go astray and it is nice to pass through the sociable old streets of The Hague and examine the windows of the old shops. I noticed that in many old Dutch cities the same environment is created and you can walk there free in the old streets. This street could also exist in Wijk bij Duurstede.

I followed the indicators, firstly in the direction of the Plein (Square). On these chalkboards we see the places well-known by Dutchmen, there is even indicated where our Queen lives: " Palace Noordeinde" , but I chose for Plein (Square).

On the Plein (Square ) there is a statue of Prince Willem the First, Prince of Orange, also called the father of the nation. The Hague has a rich history and it is of course not the intention to mention all characteristics. However, to mention a couple characteristics can be interesting for a few people among us.

Sauntering over the foot-pavement I managed to find the pond around the Binnenhof (Courtyard). Meanwhile It remained drizzly weather. This lady had found a quiet spot where she could read under a huge thick tree, beside the herring tent and with view on the fountain in the pond. And it remained rather dry under the leafs.

Later that day I have returned to this fish tent and bought myself a fresh white bread roll and the first Dutch New Herring (June 3, 2008). A delicacy! But firstly I walked further, because I was not still there where I wanted to be.

In the Hofvijver (Court Pond), seen from the "Korte Vijverberg", I saw a large white floating object, it was an art work and to me it seemed to be an iceberg, but if the artist this also meant I don't know. It was a strange object, but in a certain manner I liked it and it was very beautiful. In any case it attracted enough attention.

This is a detail of the guard-rail to prevent that people fall into the water. Clearly to see that the ironwork is handmade, pay attention to the red painted rollings.

Continuing my walk over the broad alley, along the Hofvijver (Court Pond) in the direction of the Binnenhof (Courtyard). Meanwhile it stopped raining, only the air was oppressive warmly and wet, but it sensed agreeably.

Along this path I passed the statue of another character from our national history, Johan van Oldenbarnevelt , 1547 - 1619). Warm dressed, sitting in his comfortable seat, under the tree leafs with a view over the water.

His eyes half aimed at the Mauritshuis, called to prince Maurits who let decapitate.the old man. And moreover his eyes aimed at the turret where the current minister President has his study and from here he lead the Dutch government.

Arrived at the gate to the Binnenhof (Courtyard). In the building. at the left-hand side are the safety guards. The access to the courtyard and the entrance to the turret are monitored inconspicuously but sharply. There is 24 hours per day camera supervision, but that disturbs nobody.

To the right, the gate to the turret, since a few years this access has now been concluded by a heavy iron gate.. The car of the Prime Minister was parked in front of the door, therefore I knew he was in and I photographed it for my story.

Through this gate you enter the Binnenhof (Courtyard), a large square in fact. An historical spot, where for ages Dutch policy is committed. Here take frequently demonstrations place, or petitions are offered to Members of Parliament. But today it was quiet, at least I have seen nothing particular.

This is the Ridderzaal (Knights Room) on the Binnenhof (Courtyard) where the throne reason is pronounced by the Queen, and annually the new parliamentary year is opened.

By means of this gate I left the area of the Buitenhof (Outside Court) and stood suddenly in the middle of our daily life. Traffic noise and other city sounds everywhere around me. Away from my dreams I was back in the the 21st century..

Suddenly I notice how many Dutch words are gradually replaced by English words and names in the street picture.

Examine the last two photos and count how many Dutch words you see. That goes more rapidly, then counting English words or names.

It became time to walk back direction train. The Hague is the residence of the all government buildings and ministries. This for example is the Department of Justice.at the Plein.

And this is the Ministry of Defence. Actually inconspicuous these buildings both are on the Plein.

These government buildings look out over the Plein (square) a spot where sometimes protest operations are carried out. The Plein (square) lies close to the building of the House of Commons and the chance to meet politicians is rather large. This group students were not protesting, on the contrary, they tried very enthusiastic to transmit their positive ideas concerning our current society to other youngsters and they succeeded very well!

The end of my walk through The Hague approached. Back towards the Central Station I walked along this canal and looked from the bridge to the reflection in the water. Between all the upheaval of the city you can also still find quiet spots.

Then all of a sudden engine humming… and a small boat with also a group youngsters on board. And whereas I made rapidly a photo of it they waved their hands friendly, they laughed and the small boat went further and I continued also my way also. A last goodbye and they were gone.

This path that goes from the Central Station to the Malieveld, is a large lawn which is especially confiscated by demonstrations which take place there. But moreover the Mali field offers also occasions for other large events such as festivals, circus and the well-known Indian Pasar Malam Besar, (large evenings, or night market).

Along the foot path this musician played imperturbable accordion on his instrument. We see these people now more often and you may encounter them everywhere like at entrances of supermarkets or shopping centres. But also like here just along a pathway. There are especially Romanians who settle here to earn some money with making music on the streets. This man put me to thinking, because I realized that he had left his country and probably his wife, family and friends and went to a strange foreign country for which he do not know the language and the people. He must be very lonely, He sat there along that quiet path, playing his melodies for almost nobody and he looked somewhat absent. I asked in my best German if I could make a photograph of him, he nodded leniently yes, and played imperturbably further. The question for me remained if he understood, what I asked, I dropped a couple Euros in its money bucket and he nodded friendly in my direction. Then I showed him these prerecordings on my digital camera and he smiled broad and nodded that everything was fine.

Whereas the Romanian played further I walked back the last hundred meters to the Central Station and I passed this splendid tree known and recognized by every habitant in The Hague. Vaguely the sun broke through. It was a good end for a nice day and walk in The Hague.

I have shown a small part of what this politically and culturally sparkling city has to offer. An important city with an enormously rich history.
