Den Helder - Einde "Prins Willim"

The End of the "Prins Willim"

This was how the Prince Willim looked like when I photographed it in August 2005. A beautiful replica of the V.O.C. ship "Prince Willim" which was build in the 17th
century. The city Den Helder was proud of this ship and everybody was hoping that it would stay there for ever. There were namely negotiations with the owner to sell the ship, and in case it came to a deal, the ship would go elsewhere and disappear from the skyline.

And this are the remains after the disastrous fire. Now the ship will also disappear because it has been totally devastated. Yesterday, Friday July 31, I went to the dock where the disaster took place and I saw with my own eyes what happened there in the night of 29 on 30 and what I saw was in one word "sad".

In the past I have made several photos of the "Prins Willim" because I like these kind of ships. They always remind me to tales from the past and to books I have read in my younger years.

The ship has lain for a long time in Den Helder, but I have understood from reports in the mediums, that the visitor numbers were disappointing. Every thinkable action had been undertaken to make the exploitation of the ship profitable, but that succeeded not entirely. For that reason the owner had the intention to sell the ship.

Now there is no longer the need to sell the ship. The "Prins Willim" has been destroyed by the fire.

The replica of the V.O.C. ship " Prince Willim" has been lost by an everything devastating fire. The video which I have found on YouTube has been made by Maurice Amoureus and with his authorization, and with thanks to him, I may use the video recording here . More photographs and information on:

In the night of Wednesday on Thursday 30 June a fire started in a refrigorator deeply downstairs in the ship. The fire spreaded rapidly and the fire brigade arrived fast on the spot but could not get the fire under control, they must withdraw to protect their personnel. The fire destroyed the ship entirely. I saw most of it on TV and listened to the news on the radio.

On Friday morning I went to Den Helder to see what happened and it was really sad to see what happened to this beautiful ship.

A few people came from the city and they stood there quietly, looking at the remains. The smell of burned wood and tar filled the whole area. A young couple stood there somewhat confused and the man tried to comfort his sad partner. They were interviewed by an RTV-NH reporter (TV-station). They told before the camera that they had planned their wedding on this ship. Here they planned to marry and to make an unforgettable day of it. And now they were in a lost. Certainly, their wedding will be unforgettable that is for sure, but not nice to look back on it this way. Later I heard they got offered to marry in the small historic church in Huisduinen And that is the best alternative for them.

Den Haag in één Dag - The Hague in one day

Thursday, July 23, 2009. I went to The Hague by train to see a number of IMAX films in the Omniversum theatre. It was a rainy day and therefor an excellent day to spend a couple of hours in that great theatre to be transferred into an incredibly beautiful fantasy world with splendid views. We also travelled 82 million years back in time to end up in the deep sea, which existed in the prehistoric time above the state Kansas, US. We saw the sea monsters, how big they were and how they lived. The story had been reconstructed by means of unearthing and fossils which were found in that area. Do you do want see a small part in mini format?

Click on the link to examine the programme overview of the Omniversum,
Choose on the left side "Programme",
Then "Grand Canyon Adventure" , or another film,
Click now " Trailer"
Then "Groot" or "Klein" (Big or Small),
When the trailer starts, then double click in the video screen to see the trailer in full screen mode.

There was another good reason to visit The Hague. I wanted to shoot a few photos of the surroundings nearby the museum "Museon" and the theatre "Omniversum". In earlier blogposts I have already told something concerning both buildings. There are beautiful old houses in the "Statenlaan" (States Avenue) and I discovered by means of Google Search that the prices are lying between €1,000,000.00 and €2,000,000.00. An amount of money that I have never seen on my bank account

There was time enough to explore the surroundings and I stopped at the pond next to the Museon where it was quiet and I listened to the falling rain in the water.

In the pond a stone frog stared at me continuously while the rain fell on me. In the meantime my clothes became wet and I decided to walk to the Omniversum to wait inside the building until the first show would start.

It was quiet in the entrance hall of the Omniversum. Only a few early guests whom just like me had ordered a cup of coffee and were also waiting for the next show. Behind the counter the personnel made preparations for the coming hours, because it would become a busy day as proved later that day.

In the hall is a large window to make it possible to look into the projection room where the enormous film reels are played.Next to the large window there are drawings and several boards with text where has been explained how IMAX-films are made and how much material they need to make 1 film. On the photo in the middle you can see 2 films lying above each other on large projection tables. When one film is projected on the big screen, then at the same time the other film will be winded back to the start position and it will be replaced by the another film reel.

After I had seen the first shows there was time for examining the garden next to the museum " Museon". As expected it was a very nice place there and in the meantime it the rain was over and from time to time the sun broke through the clouds.

In the garden are a few bronze statues of which is not to be seen immediately what it is or what the meaning is of the sculpture. By lacking any text or reference to the maker it only stays there waiting for admiration or aversion, but the figurine of the little boy who is sitting solitary on the lawn, holding a duck in his hands captivated me most.

The weather became better and better and the sun broke definitively through. I prepared myself to walk once again in the direction Statenlaan to see how the broad avenue and the houses are seen in full sunlight.

The terraces became filled by people. Each one found a place in the sun and they talked and laughed under the enjoyment of a drink and a snack. What a few sun rays can do with us.

A last view on the theatre and then going to the tram which brought me to the Central Station., where the train was already waiting to bring me home. I fell tired but satisfied in the comfortable seat in the train and thought to myself: "Getting older has its own advantages. No one has to tell me what to do, and I can go where I want to. I worked hard my whole life and now it's my time to do things I never had time for. I enjoy each day which is a gift to me, a bonus".

Vakantieoord "Hof van Saksen"

Holiday Place "Garden of Saksen"

Wednesday , June 22, 2009 I left home early and went by car to the holiday address where my son stays with his family

On terrains with hundreds of houses along clean roads. The cars of the residents in straight lines on the parking places. Here became visible how disciplined everything was organized. The residents are strictly kept to all kinds of rules and apparently is that a pleasant experience.

Nearby the holiday house was a clean pool where the children could swim and where they could play in the sun on a small beach. Besides rent for the holiday house, there must also be paid extra rent for the beach chairs, sunshades, boat per hour, water bicycle per hour and actually for everything you can think of. But that doesn't matter when you have fun, and making fun is exactly the intention of celebrating your holidays.

.

After a couple of hours the children got hungry, their toys were packed up, their clothing changed and we went to the restaurant where we got something to drink and to eat on the terrace. Then it was time to go back to the holiday house.

Later on we have visited this garden, everything was also in a perfect state, where even the grass appeared to stand nicely in straight rows and all grass blades were of the same length. So perfectly organized that we almost did not dare to touch it . :-)

Quite carefully I walked on my toes to the flower beds because there flew tens of butterflies around and I wanted to approach them as close as possible to photograph a few. Then it was time to drive back home.

Have a nice day

Den Haag-Scheveningen Sea-Life

Donderdag 16 juli 2009.

Thursday, July 16, 2009. A beautiful day to do something special, the sun did everything to make the best of it. I had a free journey to utilize on my train subscription and this was a good occasion. So I went to Scheveningen, actually The Hague, to `Sea-Life`, to watch forms of life in waters from all over the world, and to see what´s going on under the water surface.

Before I went to Scheveningen, I firstly went to the Omniversum theater by tram to buy tickets for a few movies which I want to see next week. I like the IMAX films on the immensely large projection screen. I would go to that theatre a couple of times a month but that´s not possible because of the expenses.Therefor I watch a few films, divided over a whole day. From the Omniversum I firstly had to walk a long distance to the next tram-stop to go to Scheveningen, but with this beautiful weather it was a nice walk. Finally I reached esplanade of Scheveningen where Sea-Life has been established.

A mysterious atmosphere rules inside the building and children were excited, they stared at the large glass walls of the aquariums, watching the small and big fishes sliding slowly through the water and then... suddenly they shoot quite fast away to a corner or between water-plants in the aquarium.

There are many shapes and colours to admire and for many children, and also adults, is this the first time to look at so many beautiful animals from such a close distance.

Because of the low intensity of the lights in the aquariums, and to respect the signs with a request not to use a flashlight when shooting photos, I made a number of photos without using a tripod. As you can imagine was the result disappointing... they are not sharp... Nevertheless I will show them in a smaller format then usual so you can see how beautiful it was inside. Sometimes it was allowed to use a flashlight.

Bizarre shapes, moving stately between water plants, looking around and turning their eyes. They are so fascinating to look at just because of their behavior and striking forms.

The placing of some aquariums is also particular. Firstly you can look at the behaviour of the fishes and turtles through the glass walls, and a little bit further down the aisle walks there was a small ladder to a higher floor where you can watch the scene from the top. One of the fishes on the second photo inhabited a stone bottle and defended her house against intruders.

After a few hours walk through half-dark spaces, it was time for me to go outside in the fresh open air, to walk over the esplanade and to find a place to drink a nice cup of coffee. Meanwhile it became warm and on the left and on the right side of the Scheveningse Pier lay several thousands seaside visitors. Despite the large number of visitors it looked like there was really sufficient space for all of them. I am not such a lover of lying for hours in the sand on a broiling day. I don´t spend my time with laying my body on the BB. I rather walk somewhat around and look at people from an appropriate distance, like from the Pier.

When you walk on the upper-deck of the Pier and then have a look over the side to below, then you have a fantastic view over the broad beach of Scheveningen. In the meantime I became tired and decided to go back home, it was enough for today I had walked a lot and I had seen a lot, enough to write a blogpost.

Before I hopped into the tram to the Central Station, I shot yet quickly this photos of the surroundings, beautiful broad streets and known buildings like the Holland Casino and the Kurhaus Hotel

I wish everybody a beautiful week and much holiday fun.
