Pure Nature and Water (PWN
Have you ever thought it over, how we get clear, clean, healthy water in our houses? I must confess I certainly don't do that daily, but it is really worth to do that once in a while. Actually, is it really so simple that when we turn open the crane on the wall there streams lovely cool water out? Sometimes I am curious to usual everyday things, then I realize that they are absolutely not self-evident. Therefore I decided to go the information centre of our water supply business PWN, called "De Hoep", to become more knowledge of our fresh water. The centre has been established in the dune territory nearby Castricum, North Holland.

In this information centre you may discover how drinking water in first instance was won, pure and only from the dune territory. Because the need for more water became so large that all kind of measures had to be taken to foresee in it. The information has been targeted in the first place on youth, considering the playful manner and didactic intention of the exhibitions space. Do not think the information is only for children and school youth. I have learned a lot of how fresh water is won with modern means and techniques.

In a well-organized manner, on basis of schedules and plans is explained that in the dune territory, deeply under the ground, big "water bubbles" are. The bottom layer in these bubbles consist of salt water, originating from the North Sea, and the top layer consists of sweet water obtained by rain, snow etc.. This rainwater is firstly filtered in a natural manner by the dune sand before it get much more adaptations to end up ultimately in the water supply-system. This is a simple summary of the principle.

In a subtle manner, a connection has been made between the living nature in the water win area and the need for sufficient drinking water. They can not continue to withdraw sweeten water from the water bubbles in the ground, that would lead to a mix with the salty water. Flora and fauna would suffer by these changes and the water would become useless for drinking water. To prevent this and to find a balance, they make use of precious and complicated systems, to withdrawn water from mainly the IJsselmeer (former Zuiderzee) and from rivers. This water is filtered in stages on its way to the water win area and cleaned before it will be raised in the existing "water bubbles" and ultimately become drinkable water.

In the exhibitions space, there are various screens with video animations and stands that can be used interactively. A particular efficient way to learn fast to understand how it all works.

There is much attention for the natural balance and especially for what has to be done to keep this position in balance. Flora and Fauna in the water winning area get a lot attention. Here for instance a possibility to let hear bird sounds by pressing a button on a panel. What you hear is the sound that a certain bird makes and you can find the bird on the model This way you learn which bird which sound produces. And all these animals live in the dunes area.

In an attractive surroundings they spent also attention at particular and protected plants in the dune territory, some are really rare.

For small kids (adults are allowed too) there was an amusing discovery play. Pressing on a start button, this angler tells all about the animals which live in the dune territory where our drinking water comes from. It is also a protected nature area and it becomes emphasized that we carefully must deal with what we yet have in this small country. Everybody must keep his hands off and leave this area as it is now, and we must treat the remaining life respectfully. That is actually the errand I got.
And the water that comes from our crane is not as self-evident as you thought... Think about this when you sit in a bath with approximately 300 litres, or more, heated drinking water.... Compare this situation then for a moment with countries where people sometimes have to walk hours for one bucket dirty water. For everything we need water, to drink, wash, cook and you name it for what. It is not silly to be aware sometimes of things we borrow from Mother Nature. It's a good habit to stand still for a moment and to realize how privileged we are. And I like the slogan: "Don't use more then you necessarily need".

Fijne dag verder.

And now I am also inquisitively how drinking water comes into lost mountainous areas or dessert areas. It would be nice when someone else can tell something more about that. Below a link to photo albums of PWN. No texts, only pictures to look at.

Have a nice day. (and sorry for the errors, it was a long story)

Strandwandeling

As from the day that I can not make considerable long walks in the dune area with my dog Jufo, I stayed at home far too much. Also the weather was not encouraging to go out and all together I became considerable dejected and quite lazy of it. When I saw that I also grew a few kilos, then I decided seriously to do something about it. This way of living does not work.

And what a relief... When I awoke yesterday morning I saw it would become a clear nice day, at last. After the daily morning ritual, I got my coat, took my camera and went out the door, leaving behind a loud barking Jufo. I looked back over my shoulder and forced myself to walk on. This was something I did not do before and Jufo did not understand why I walked away without her. (Jufo is a female dog, that's why I call her a She).
I left the house, my head filled with negative thoughts and the intention to make a long walk to become physically tired and to make my head empty.

Along the road there are various signs with information for walking- and bicycle tours. I had chosen for a walk from my house in Callantsoog to the beach by Groote Keeten (Large Sheds). That is approximately 4.5 km. Away and back thus 9 km.

The first part to Groote Keeten I chose to walk over the bicycle path and at the end of it to the left in the direction of the beach.

In the distance I saw light beacon called "Falga", but I did not need to walk that far to the beach. On the spot where I shot this photograph I went leftward and after a few hundred meters through a narrow strip dune territory I came at the beach.

It became a sunny day, but the temperature came not above 5°C and with the sturdy wind I surely had to wear warm clothes. On several locations the beach was covered with a thick foam layer. As far as I know it has something to do with phosphate in the seawater and algae growth and that it is harmless, but I do not know exactly what it is. All I know is that children play nicely and make fun with the foam.

The sun, the wind and the sounds of the sea made me forget everything what went on in my head. As I walked on the hard sand along the tide line, each time I heard a cracking sound. Then I looked behind me to see where that crunchy sound came from, but I saw nothing... Until I realized that the sound came from under my own shoes. When I stepped on shells I crushed them under my shoe soles. A sound, that I had not heard in years, since I have hearing devices, I experience all these sounds as new.

In the sand you see these horse trails, have a good look at them you can see and discover how the horse has walked. This horse has walked normally, thus one foot after the other.

And here two horses galloped next to each other. The hind legs landing approximately on the same place as the furrow legs.

When I awoke from my meditations I saw two riders along the tide line, each riding a small horse. I was thinking; "How strong are these animals actually that they can carry that weight over such long distances?". When we passed each other we exchanged greetings and continued our own way.

High above me flew a seagull searching something edible. I followed him with the camera and shot this picture. After doing that I continued my way home, because I got tired and wanted a mug hot strong coffee.

When I arrived at home a load barking Jufo greeted me. Jufo who looked at me with this amazed look. Not understanding why she had to stay at home, while I was going away without her. We have to stay together. She really understood nothing of it, hence that look full incomprehension.

Witte Paas - White Easter :-)

It has not been snowing over the last forty years during Easter, and now it started yesterday evening... really snowing. Not much, but nevertheless.... And when I looked through the window this morning I saw an ice layer on the flat roof of our garage. However, I laughed at the idea that it was unusually warm with Christmas for that time of the year. And now there is snow and ice whereas in fact we would have go to the blooming bulb fields.

Waar gaat Kerstmis nu eigenlijk over?

I get more and more confused about all those holidays. Where stands Christmas for actually? I think it's about a fat, little, white bearded man, called Santa, wearing a red suit, that never fits. He flies on Christmas night in a moose-sleigh through the skies. One of the moose', by the name of Rudolf, has a twinkling red nose. So other sky traffic can see that the full packed sleigh is on it's way. And Easter?.... Where stand that for nowadays?... Oh yes, concerning chickens, .... and hares who lays chocolate eggs, small and BIG ones, and bring them around in baskets. There are also chickens which lay ordinary eggs in an eggs fabric. Those eggs are sometimes painted and a hare hides them somewhere around the house. The children have to search and find them again, afterwards they must clean up everything. It is a quite funny game, really..... But is Easter about that actually?..... Happy Easter.

Héé.... the sun is shining now! Eh?.... No it is snowing again :-)

Witte Paas - White Easter :-)
