Puur Natuur en Water (PWN)

Wel eens nagedacht over, hoe het kan dat er gezond, helder water uit de kraan stroomt? Ik moet bekennen dat ik dat zeker niet dagelijks doe, maar het is toch goed om er eens bij stil te staan. Is het eigenlijk wel zo vanzelfsprekend dat als we de kraan open draaien er dan heerlijk koel water uit stroomt? Soms ben ik wel eens nieuwsgierig naar gewone alledaagse dingen, dan ontdek ik dat het helemaal niet zo vanzelfsprekend is. Daarom besloot ik eens te gaan kijken en meer te weten te komen bij het informatiecentrum "De Hoep" van ons waterleidingbedrijf PWN. Dat centrum is gevestigd in het duingebied bij Castricum, Noord-Holland.

Have you ever thought it over, how we get clear, clean, healthy water in our houses? I must confess I certainly don't do that daily, but it is really worth to do that once in a while. Actually, is it really so simple that when we turn open the crane on the wall there streams lovely cool water out? Sometimes I am curious to usual everyday things, then I realize that they are absolutely not self-evident. Therefore I decided to go the information centre of our water supply business PWN, called "De Hoep", to become more knowledge of our fresh water. The centre has been established in the dune territory nearby Castricum, North Holland.

In dit informatiecentrum ontdek je hoe water in eerste instantie werd gewonnen puur en alleen uit het duingebied. Maar doordat de vraag naar water zo groot werd, moesten er allerlei maatregelen en voorzieningen worden getroffen om in de behoefte naar schoon drinkwater te voorzien. De voorlichting is in eerste aanleg gericht op de jeugd, gezien de speelse manier en didactische opzet van de tentoonstellingsruimte. Maar denk niet dat het alleen voor kinderen en schooljeugd is opgezet. Ik heb er in ieder geval heel veel van opgestoken hoe er met moderne middelen en technieken drinkwater wordt gewonnen.

In this information centre you may discover how drinking water in first instance was won, pure and only from the dune territory. Because the need for more water became so large that all kind of measures had to be taken to foresee in it. The information has been targeted in the first place on youth, considering the playful manner and didactic intention of the exhibitions space. Do not think the information is only for children and school youth. I have learned a lot of how fresh water is won with modern means and techniques.

Op overzichtelijke wijze, aan de hand van schema's wordt uitgelegd dat er zich in het duingebied, diep onder de grond, "waterbellen" bevinden. In de onderste lagen bevindt zich zout water, afkomstig uit de Noordzee, en daarbovenop drijft zoet water, in eerste instantie verkregen door regen. Dit water wordt eerst op natuurlijke wijze gefilterd door het duinzand voordat het nog veel meer bewerkingen ondergaat om tenslotte in het waterleiding-stelsel te belanden. Dit is een summiere samenvatting van het principe.

In a well-organized manner, on basis of schedules and plans is explained that in the dune territory, deeply under the ground, big "water bubbles" are. The bottom layer in these bubbles consist of salt water, originating from the North Sea, and the top layer consists of sweet water obtained by rain, snow etc.. This rainwater is firstly filtered in a natural manner by the dune sand before it get much more adaptations to end up ultimately in the water supply-system. This is a simple summary of the principle.

Op subtiele wijze wordt het verband gelegd tussen de levende natuur in het waterwingebied en de het voldoen aan de vraag naar voldoende drinkwater. Je kan niet zomaar doorgaan met zoet water te onttrekken aan de bodem, dat zou er toe leiden dat het zoute water zich zou gaan vermengen met het zoete water. Om dit te voorkomen wordt er middels kostbare en ingewikkelde systemen, water onttrokken aan voornamelijk het IJsselmeer en uit rivieren. Dit water wordt onderweg steeds verfijnder gefilterd, opgeslagen in de "waterbellen" en tenslotte gezuiverd tot drinkwater.

In a subtle manner, a connection has been made between the living nature in the water win area and the need for sufficient drinking water. They can not continue to withdraw sweeten water from the water bubbles in the ground, that would lead to a mix with the salty water. Flora and fauna would suffer by these changes and the water would become useless for drinking water. To prevent this and to find a balance, they make use of precious and complicated systems, to withdrawn water from mainly the IJsselmeer (former Zuiderzee) and from rivers. This water is filtered in stages on its way to the water win area and cleaned before it will be raised in the existing "water bubbles" and ultimately become drinkable water.

In de tentoonstellingsruimte staan diverse beeldschermen met video animatie en andere opstellingen die interactief kunnen worden gebruikt. Een bijzonder efficiënte manier om snel te leren begrijpen hoe het allemaal in zijn werk gaat.

In the exhibitions space, there are various screens with video animations and stands that can be used interactively. A particular efficient way to learn fast to understand how it all works.

Er wordt veel aandacht geschonken aan het natuurlijk evenwicht en vooral aan datgene wat er aan wordt gedaan om dat evenwicht in stand te houden. Flora en Fauna in het waterwingebied krijgen veel aandacht en ook hier weer de mogelijkheid om bijvoorbeeld vogelgeluiden te laten horen. Door op een knop te drukken bij een afbeelding op het paneel, kun je de vogel zien in de maquette dus zodoende kun je leren welke vogel welk geluid produceert.

There is much attention for the natural balance and especially for what has to be done to keep this position in balance. Flora and Fauna in the water winning area get a lot attention. Here for instance a possibility to let hear bird sounds by pressing a button on a panel. What you hear is the sound that a certain bird makes and you can find the bird on the model This way you learn which bird which sound produces. And all these animals live in the dunes area.

Ook wordt er in een aantrekkelijke omgeving veel aandacht besteed aan bijzondere en beschermde planten in het duingebied, sommige zijn werkelijk zeldzaam.

In an attractive surroundings they spent also attention at particular and protected plants in the dune territory, some are really rare.

Dan voor de kleinsten (maar ook volwassenen hoor) een leuke ontdekkingstocht. door op een knop te drukken vertelt deze hengelaar welke dieren er allemaal voorkomen in het duingebied waar ons drinkwater wordt gewonnen. Het is dus tevens een beschermd natuurgebied en er wordt benadrukt dat we zuinig moeten omspringen met wat we nog overhebben in dit land. Hier moet iedereen vanaf blijven en het hier voorkomende leven respecteren, dat is eigenlijk de boodschap die ik heb meegekregen. En dat er water uit onze kraan komt is niet zo vanzelfsprekend als dat het lijkt. Denk even na wanneer je in een bad zit met ongeveer 300 liter verwarmd drinkwater..... Vergelijk deze situatie dan eens met landen waar het soms uren kost om één emmer smerig water te bemachtigen waar alles mee moet gebeuren, drinken, wassen, eten koken en noem maar op wat wij normaal vinden. Het is niet gek om er soms eens bij stil te staan hoe goed wij het hebben. En de slogan: "Gebruik niet méér dan je nodig hebt", spreekt mij wel aan.

For small kids (adults are allowed too) there was an amusing discovery play. Pressing on a start button, this angler tells all about the animals which live in the dune territory where our drinking water comes from. It is also a protected nature area and it becomes emphasized that we carefully must deal with what we yet have in this small country. Everybody must keep his hands off and leave this area as it is now, and we must treat the remaining life respectfully. That is actually the errand I got.
And the water that comes from our crane is not as self-evident as you thought... Think about this when you sit in a bath with approximately 300 litres, or more, heated drinking water.... Compare this situation then for a moment with countries where people sometimes have to walk hours for one bucket dirty water. For everything we need water, to drink, wash, cook and you name it for what. It is not silly to be aware sometimes of things we borrow from Mother Nature. It's a good habit to stand still for a moment and to realize how privileged we are. And I like the slogan: "Don't use more then you necessarily need".

En nu ben ik ook nieuwsgierig geworden hoe men aan drinkwater komt in afgelegen bergachtige gebieden. Het zou wel aardig zijn als iemand anders daar iet meer over zou kunnen vertellen.
