Unfinished Stories

Vrijdag 22 augustus 2008.

Friday, August 22, 2008. I'm not going to finish the Tall Ships narration. The story becomes much too long. I'll no longer tell about the many beautiful ships I saw. I also won't say anything about the Polish ship Zawisza Czarny with mainly blind crew members. A blind crew who under accompaniment could perform all the work on board of the ship. These people had the time of their live.

The story concerning the tall and small ships in the harbour of Den Helder remains in my memory. Not one word about German, Norwegian, Belgian, British, French, Polish, Spanish, Danish, Mexican, Brazilian, Russian, Dutch, Oman ships that I admired from so nearby. Most visitors were impressed by the tall Russian four master Sedov.

I have seen a lot during a round trip through the harbour of Den Helder on a rescue boat. I admired the ships as seen from the water and they looked quite different from that point of view.

Zaterdag 23 augustus 2008.

Saturday, August 23, 2008. You will also never know how funny it was in such a box to see Den Helder from this height.

From that position I had a view over the water, called "Marsdiep", to the island Texel and a panoramic view over a part of the city. It was early in the morning and I was on my way to the Dike to watch the Tall Ships sailing away. There was time enough to make some rounds in this thing.

Thousands of people arrived by train or by car and from this height I could see how disciplined people used the crossings. Each person on their way to the Dike to find the best spot with a beautiful view over the Marsdiep.

Suddenly the sound of a howling siren. An ambulances motorcycle approached the crossing with high speed where I was waiting to cross the road. The police at this busy crossroads got obvious information over what was going on and were looking in the direction where the motorcycle disappeared. The first spectators, on the Dike looked also in the same direction.

While at the land side of the Dike people tried to catch a glimpse of something that happened on the road, others found meanwhile at the sea side of the Dike their favourite spot to look at the spectacle on the Marsdiep. As time progressed it became crowded and we looked at the first events at the water.

One of the first ships that left was the Russian Tall Ship "Sedov", an imposing ship, but the people expected more and it was a little disappointing because she did not carry all sails.

Meanwhile the public on the Dike became amused by demonstrations given by the Royal Dutch Navy Air Force, Customs, Rescue boats and Police. They flew and ran very fast at high speeds. Nicely to see was how a helicopter hunted a fast speedboat. One could imagine how it goes when they hunt smugglers.

One ship after the other showed off along the thousands of spectators on the Dike. Not all ships carried their sails, but in spite of that it was a beautiful sight when they paraded against the scenery of the many small sail boats and the isle Texel in the background.

The Mexican ship "CUAUHTEMOCO" fired a few salutes when she past the Dutch fregat "DE RUYTER" of the Royal Dutch Navy. I had the intention at the beginning of this blog to say nothing about the last two days of the Tall Ships Races 2008, but I wrote this by mistake,.... did I?
