De tandarts - The dentist

Smile!.... haha.. aaaah....

I needed two new crowns on the upper right-hand set of my teeth. Therefore the dentist had to remove the original crowns on January 5. Usually there is more to do then just that. During the first visit to the dentist, he made the nerves in the root canals dead, drilled the root canals to make them partly empty, and then he placed temporary stuffing. Fortunately all this happened with a robust local anaesthesia so that I almost did not notice anything. After that I had to "bite" in some tough substance to make a print of the teeth who were left. Now everything was ready for the dental mechanic to make the two new crowns fitting. : -)

The second visit to the dentist was on 16 January, the root canals became once again drilled and some extra preparations were made for placing the new crowns. This intervention was less vehemently then the first time.

And finally on january 19 the new crowns were placed effortlessly. All together It has cost a few pennies but I have no toothache any longer and I have a broader smile when I read Hunter's conversations with Memaw.

Utrecht

Wednesday, January 14, I traveled by train to Utrecht to walk around in the surroundings where my parents lived in this old city. My parents lived in at least 6 different houses. One removal followed by another and those moving parties went on and on..... until a certain point without me.

The photographs I'll show here were all taken in the direct surroundings of the neighbourhood of one particular house in the centre of the city. I keep the best memories of this house in de Lange Nieuwstraat (Long Newstreet). This was the place where the most radical changes in my life took place and this neighbourhood kept always its attraction on me.

My parents lived in the middle of the downtown of Utrecht, a few houses next to the Cathedral and at the end of the street we had a view on the the Dom tower who rises high above the city. I always liked the old city very well, the old houses, the narrow streets and alleys and the canals with its cellars In my imagination I always think back at medieval times from which I learned at school and from books.

At the edge of the old downtown then you see the transition to a later period. Large houses of which can be accepted that they have been inhabited by very wealthy people in the first half of the 19de century. Now these enormous houses have been organized mainly as offices and such things.

I discovered that they actively worked on programs for tidying up the surroundings and cultivating old pawns. Fortunately they are taking care on these beautiful places and it deserves appreciation that there is committed this way maintenance to all those small maisonettes.

Opposite the here shown monumental building at "Lepelenburg" there is a row of small houses that look impressively well. Next to these small houses there is this alley, and I realized that this was previously a very narrow and small place to live in. I saw that the house now became inhabited again!. Presumably by students, but I'm not convinced of that.

On the left side next to the imposing door, there is a plate with this text:

BRUNTENHOF
Fifteen in 1621 by Frederik Brunt on the spot of the medieval Small Lepelenburg built rooms. On number 5, stands the main building with the monumental gate. Between 1979 and 1981, the complex has been restored.

Along the canals in the old downtown there are everywhere cellars in which trade goods were, and still are, stored. In the past most goods were mainly transported via the canals by boats. This is a view over the "New Canal", that lies at the back side of the street where my parents lived.

And this is the "Old Canal" that lay at the front side, not far from the house where my parents lived. This canal is twice as broad as the other canal and this one is also famous for the cellars in which pubs and small catering businesses are established.

The canals wending through the old part of the city, maintaining the character of old downtown of Utrecht. Here you have a good view on how trade goods were transported over the water on the back side ....

.... and in the narrow shopping streets at the front side, were traded to the public. The stores are still here and do good businesses each day. It remind me that friends of my parents, who lived here, had a bicycle trade in one of these shops.

A view from under the houses of the "Lijnmarkt". It makes me always think of Venice where the houses also are built directly at the waterfront.

Just a little bit further, on the right, the impressing city Hall of Utrecht. Its here where my wife and I got married in December 1957. That is a long time ago.... The hall where the ceremony took place is at the back side of this building, but on the moment that I took these photographs it wasn't accessible, because some activities took place there.

The City Hall, here seen at the front side . Look how the connections of the Old Canal goes under the streets and houses and everywhere cellar spaces.

In the Spring and on summery days, it's a bustling space here, market booths, crowded stores and along the canal packed terraces. In all those years some things has been changed, but the pleasant atmosphere remained.

Film: The Secret Of Roan Inish

Yesterday evening I have seen this great film from the beginning to the end. It is an enchanting fable. The tale takes place on some isolated islands in Ireland and it concerns the secrets around a "Selkie" , half human, half seal and the principal character, a little girl of 10 years old. The grandfather of this little girl, an old islander of Roan Inish, is a great story teller. He tells old tales which find connection in the present time of the film. I am crazy about old Irish stories and Irish music, therefore my evening was great. Here is the trailer of the film and there are still more fragments on Internet concerning this film
I certainly recommend the film and maybe you can watch the film in one part somewhere.

Nieuwjaarsduik 2009 - New Year Dive 2009

Every year on New Years Day, clock stroke 13:00 hours, traditionally a New Years Dive is organized on the beach nearby Julianadorp. From the road to the beach is a few hundred meters walk. This year for the third time in a row I wanted to see the "heroes" run into the ice-cold water of the North Sea. The temperature was around 4° C, so it was warmer then predicted by the weather stations, but still cold enough for most people to keep their warm clothes on.

When I arrived at the path to the beach, there was no room to park my car, so I decided to park my car elsewhere not far from here. On the corner to the parking space there are the remains of the fire works that was fired last night. Tomorrow it will become cleared by the cleanings service I presume. That happens every year.

People from everywhere come here to look at this unusual spectacle, because you must be a little bit odd or you have strange habits when you like to go in the ice-cold water under these circumstances. It is funny to look at all these shivering people. Young, old, beautiful and less beautiful participants, everybody can participate and they have a lot fun. Most spectators look as if have they had a heavy night shift, they look with dejected faces at which is visible that the nocturnal celebration has claimed its toll.

Finally the participants and spectators gather in front of the beach tent and are waiting for the start signal to risk the dive together. Spectators seek the cake and soupy tent for something warmly to drink, and everybody is waiting for the Great moment.

Some participants start to make preparations by loosening some garments and meanwhile they do all kind of body exercises to get it a bit warmly.

These rascals had also fun on the beach, one started to dig a pit to shorten the waiting time and the other watched and looked interested for what she was doing. Maybe it was a magical trick and would she find a nice bone.

Finally the signal sounded to come to the start line. They waited cold and full tension for the sign to run over the beach to the waterfront,. Then they must jump directly into the sea and go completely under water for they may call it a real New Years Dive. And there was the GO signal to to run!

And there the whole pack ran in a straight line to me. The first fast boys and tough girls ran under shouting from the public in full speed to meet the surf.

They ran left and right from me and the cold water splashed around. I had to protect my camera a bit, but I wanted to continue to shoot pictures while I stood with my new shoes in the salty water. The primitive whoops of the men and the screaming girls were sensational altogether it made me laugh because it was so funny.

A fast run into the sea, head under water and as fast as you can back to the beach to put on warm clean clothing. Back on the beach the entertaining heroic participants are welcomed with hot chocolate milk or something else of warm drinks. The new year has been brought in again with this tradition and there can be told a few tasty stories to family and friends. The first day has almost come to an end and our normal life will start here again. All feasts and eating parties lie behind us and we pick up our daily life as it was before Christmas time. The dream is over, welcome back in the real world :-)
