More rainy days

E. & O. E. (errors and omissions excepted)

On my birthday (May 15) I got a congratulation card from my cousin Cor, written by himself on May 13 , and that was absolutely particular. His wife Wil always wrote the cards. Casually he told me, that he would be operated on my birthday to remove a bowel tumour. This message was considerably scaring, because I had never heard concerning his sickness. I rang his wife Wil to ask how the operation had gone and she said all went well, but Cor was still on the intensive care department.

A couple days later I phoned his wife again and she told me that his situation had now improved to the point that he no longer stayed on the Intensive Care department, but Cor felt not well. In itself not alarming after such a heavy operation

But last Monday I got a mourning card in the mail box and I feared already the brunt. When I opened the envelope I saw his name and my presumption had been confirmed. Cor had died Friday 23 May and would be cremated on Thursday 29 May (yesterday).

I left home early and went by car to the crematory which is on the cemetery in Almere where the ceremony would take place and we could escort Cor to his last destination. And I notice frequently that at these occasions it is raining. Why?.. I don't know, but it frequently happens.

It was an impressive funeral where many beautiful memories to Cor were reminded and the music played was Cor his own choice and which he loved the most.

Today the day started with drizzling weather and a sultry temperature. In fact it rained continuously, but I did not want to stay at home. Therefore I firstly walked the dog Jufo, and when you have seen the short video, then you know where that is. And after doing that I brought Jufo home, I took my camera and drove my small car along the dunes, direction Petten.

I stopped a couple times to make photos, but it was bleak weather, not good enough to make beautiful or inspiring photos. In fact my photographs must support a story and not to be seen as Art.

And so I arrived at the bird sanctuary which lies behind the dike called "Hondsbossche Zeewering", an ideal place for birds to find food in the brackish water and an undisturbed stay. The small area is protected with a wire palisade, therefore you can examine, observe and photograph everything from a short distance.

Birds will really sit for you so you can make your photo, look at this group cormorants. On the background you see parts of places like Camperduin, Groet and Schoorl.

I stopped the car and put it on the road side to shoot a photo of this strange figure. He only stood there in that wet field. It is the contrast that in one area the birds are lured and a couple kilometres further they are driven away. When you encounter that obscure figure in the middle of the night then you will be considerable scared.

Prettig weekend

A little bit further along the road, to the foot of the dunes, there are beautiful blooming burnet-roses. Small flowers, nevertheless splendid when you examine them from a short distance. Those droplets are real, because it was still raining you know. This is it for today, however, enough for a weekend I hope.

Have a good weekend

On a rainy day

Do you remember him?

Searching for some entertainment I googled this videos (what a strange verb). Do you still remind him? Tommy was, and still is, one of my favourites.

Photo compilation Castle Romboud

To try out the free programme " Photo Story 3 for Windows" I have made a compilation of fotos' s of castle Radboud in Medemblik. Afterwards I have uploaded the serial to Google Video and then downloaded the code to my PC so I could show the photograph tale here. I was only curious and for this reason I tried it in several ways. I wish you all a nice and sunny weekend.

Vis, Knopen en Splitsen

Fish, Knots and Rope Splices

E. & O. E. (errors and omissions excepted)

While I placed my order this morning in the fish shop in Den Helder, and the fish salesman my fishes plunged into hot oil, I looked around and saw all those delicious fish in the cooled showcases. The shop and all materials are always spotless clean there and it smells always as fresh fish and that does not stink! When fish stinks, don't eat it.

The fish salesman filleted a fresh raw herring for a customer, and asked if he had to cut it in bits, and the customer said: " Yes, I eat it here."
The fish salesman: " Onions?

Customer: " Yes please".
The bits herring were laid on a tidy, clean porcelain dish, and beside the bits herring some cut raw onion. A wooden pricker in one of the bits made this bite complete. The fish salesman handed over the dish to the customer who didn't hesitate a second and the first pieces disappeared under the nose of the customer.

Whereas my fishes still sputtered in hot oil, I looked once more around me and saw a large wooden chalkboard on the wall with a number of knots and splices. That remind me to a very long time ago where I was in training on a nautical school for young men. At that time I was a boy of 14 years old. On that school we learned, beside many other things, also the art of laying knots and to split rope. I examined the examples once more and I recognized most of them but a number I was totally forgotten.

My fried fishes were ready and were tidy packed in a small bag. In my car, way back home, I still continued to think about those knots and split ropes on that wooden chalkboard. And now,at home I searched on the Internet to find something concerning this subject. And Yes…. here are a couple references to absolute nice videos that show how to make a number of those knots. I hope you can enjoy both videos.

Click this link in Dutch, try this one...., really nice:
When you're there... click on the pictures to view a video

And Click this link in English, more complicated, but when you are interested....

Een Nieuw Decenium

Happy Birthday to Meeeee!

E. & O. E. (errors and omissions excepted)

Today is the last day of my sixty .... years. Tomorrow I step into a new decade. Another crown year in my life, the new crown year is called "Jacob" the same as my second Christian name. Statistically I am tomorrow a so called old man. People of 70 years old and more, belong in a home for elderly people. Well, let me tell you, I am and will NEVER be ready for that. It is a strange feeling to realize that I have reached this age of 70. It makes me think back to so many family members whom preceded me. I have to get used to the idea that I have more years behind me then in the future.. I am NOT depressed, but it's a moment to look back on my life. Sing it loud together with me...

Happy Birthday to Meeee :-)

Have a nice day too!

Tulip business

E. & O. E. (errors and omissions excepted)

The last few days it is splendid sunny weather with a smattering wind. It's a known fact that at this stage the bulb fields very fast complete blossoming and at that moment the tulips will be beheaded :-(|). Then this tulip season, with all those splendid coloured fields, is behind us for one year. For the farmers a busy time is ahead. A time of harvests, peeling bulbs, sorting them, store and put them on the market. Work and doing business, that's what counts now. Before all this is going to happen I caught my bicycle and took my small camera with me and went out to see the fields once more.

It was fascinating to see the remaining fields still in full glory. It is a beautiful view and in fact it's a pity that it's over in such a short time. As said before, it is time for doing business and then farmers are not sentimental. :-)

Now is the time, where the first activities started before harvest, the so called Beheading. I can remember the time that I saw a lot of people standing between those tulips. With bowed backs they stood there in the fields and beheaded tulip by tulip, one by one with their hands and threw them in a basket which they carried with them. Very time-consuming and heavy labour.

Now 1 man can complete whole fields with this machine. The apparatus is geared to a certain distance from the ground and with only agility the thing is driven through the narrow paths along the flower beds. With slaps of the rad the flowers are separated from the stalks by a turning rad. The remaining flowers will be removed at a later stage. It goes incredibly fast and efficiently.

Today it was an excellent day to enjoy the weather and the bulb fields. It was a wonderful bicycle ride along the fields, breathing fresh air and sniffing the smell of so many flowers on this warm day. I also got my daily exercises :-). I wish for everyone such a nice day as I had today.
