Het jaareinde - The end of the year

Also today December 30, 2008 the day began with bright sunlight and a blue sky and it froze light, somewhere around -3° C, and there was no wind. Altogether a beautiful day to go out for a long walk. This time I had chosen for "Het Zwanenwater" probably best translated in "The Swan Lake", which is a protected nature area at the edge of the village where I live, Callantsoog.

After months hanging around at home, this was perhaps the moment for a new start for going outdoors to relax. On my wandering through this beautiful nature area, I climbed on a dune from where I had a beautiful view on the "first puddle". There are two large fens where especially birds find a save area. At the other side of the dune on which I stood I could also see the "second puddle".

The water had been frozen but I don't know if the ice was strong enough to skate on. I didn't try to find out. I remember this place from former years, where the winters were really cold. In the early '60s we could skate here free, I remember that I made my rounds here at that time. Actually I don't know whether it is allowed to skate here nowadays. The world has been changed.

On this photo you can see how low the sun stood in this time of the year around 11:00 in the morning. On the next photo there you see the entry to the birds observation hut. The bridge has been built over the water and separated by reed screens not to frighten the birds. (please, send me the correct words, I guessed this line :-) At the end of the bridge is the hut where also information about the many birds can to be found. Only in this time of the year, the birds hide and are scarcely visible.

You can look at your surroundings from different perspectives.Mostly I prefer to see a total image of the surroundings in which I am, but I have also an eye for small details. For me it is just looking at the ground to see the fine structure of frost. All those little ice crystals are really beautiful.

And with these musings, we walk over the bridge into the new year 2009. A new period with hope for better times in front of us. The same thoughts and wishes as each year.... The year we leave behind us had setbacks and sorrow, but brought also a lot of luck and fun. A year with good and bad news lies behind us. We are prepared with trust for a new start, with well meant resoles such as; we will slim, we stop smoking, we will be dear for each other etcetera..... I wish for everybody a healthy and successful year and love. I hope that all your beautiful dreams will become reality.

Gelukkig Nieuwjaar!

Happy New Year!

Mijn schaduw en ik - Me and my shadow

I woke up this morning, looked outside through the window and I saw it would become a beautiful day. On the roofs of houses and garages I saw an ice layer but no snow. The blue sky and sunshine at the same time gave me a good feeling. After a mug of hot coffee and a light breakfast it was time to walk the dog.

As soon as I open the front door, the first thing the dog does is loud barking. That's the way she welcomes the new day and let the neighbours know that she's still here. It only takes a few seconds. Then we walk to the other side, over the field in front of our house, to the bushes. There all small branches and blades of grass become subjected at a meticulous examination. Each leaf and branch becomes attentive sniffed at and that can take time by which I patiently wait and watch. Then we walk further and this scene repeats itself a few times. Then comes a moment, that the daily need must be done, and that happens mostly on a fixed spot between the bushes. It is my habit to clear away this sh... in a special plastic bag and then throw it in the dustbin.

The sun stood very low and shine on my back. I looked at the long shadow that I followed in front of me. In twisted thoughts, I thought a moment on a story or a poem, that I can not remember in detail, but the story line was, that someone described how he tried to pass his own shadow, fascinating thoughts....
I also asked myself how long my shadow was on this hour of the day. I stopped and looked at the point on which the top of the shadow of my head ended on the street. I marked this point in my thoughts and began to walk to that fixed point, meanwhile I counted my steps.. I counted 12 robust steps, that's approximately 12 meters. If you put this length upright then you have a robust tall fellow: -)

I went into another street on the right and got rid of my own shadow because it was disappeared behind high bushes. On my way home, a little bit further I went again to the right into another street, hereby the sun was dazzling directly my eyes. I turned my head and meanwhile I tried to get used to the fierce sunlight. At the same time I saw that my shadow now pursued me, nothing helped if I walked fast or deviated from my path. The shadow was sticked at my feet, I couldn't get rid of it :-).

Mmmm. ..... wat een nonsens verhaal, maar uiteindelijk ..... :O)

I borrowed the photograph from someone on the internet for I had left home my own camera, but the effect was exactly the same. The maker of the photo becomes kindly thanks. : -)

Mmmm...... what a nonsens story but after all ..... :O)

Kerstavond - Christmas Evening

On this Christmas Eve, my thoughts go to all who are dearly to me. And therefore I made this afternoon this video to show you how many Christmas cards we have received. All together approximately 70! Thanks everybody, thanks for the time that you were thinking of us.

Rev. Billy of the Church of Stop Shopping :-)

Billy of the Church of Stop Shopping.

Last night I watched with amazement TV for at least one hour. The VPRO TV-station broadcasted a compilation about the battle against shopping of Rev. Billy of the Church of Stop Shopping. This American comedian leads an amusing, but nevertheless serious fight against the idiotic habit of buying all kind of useless rubbish and food for Christmas. The story was brought comically, but it certainly has a deeper meaning. On YouTube I found many parts of the film and who watches the small film here, can also make a choice from other fragments. Just make your own conclusions and think afterwards about what Christmas actually means and what should be celebrated. Many children don't know that and think that Christmas is only about gifts and eating, but in my perception it's more. My advice is few some amusing fragments and enjoy. :-)

Kerstkaarten - Christmas cards

In the weeks before Christmas, we send cards to family, friends and relations on which we wish that they have a Merry, Glorious, Happy or Pleasant Christmas celebration. We can buy everywhere the most beautiful wish cards, but you can also rig up them by yourself. That is not done to save money, but because of pastime. Some cards are really small works of art and it's visible that a lot of time and fantasy was put in it to make a good result. The meaning behind all the work is, that the maker's thoughts were all the time with the person where the card was meant for and that is not measurable in money. But the most important meaning of all Christmas wishes is that our thoughts were with the other.

We received the card at the top from my niece Nellie. Each year she send us such a self made card and each year are we surprised by her creativity. It is not the only card that we have received, but only one from a long series. We value all well meant wishes written on all these beautiful Christmas cards. They come from all corners of the country and from continents and islands over seas and oceans, from Canada, the U.S.A and even from New Zealand. Such warm feelings of friendship and appreciation Christmas gives.

Windows Live Beta Discovery

Now I have more time, I started a discovery journey through the new programs of Windows Live (Beta). When I started it was really an heap of rubble and I had to find my way through the scarce and sometimes unclear explanations I had to read them two, sometimes three times and then I still did not always understood the meaning of it. At a certain point I decided to give up my old Hotmail account and everything what was linked with that account. I removed it entirely from the Windows server. Afterwards I have opened a complete new Live account and with that account I have created a totally new surroundings.

On the mentioned links you may download the new beta versions of Windows Live and after I had installed them my discovery travel started. Gradually became clear to me what all possibilities are and I must admit honestly there are a lot and the consistency between Live programs work really well. The present difficulty is mainly the familiarization to the new principle. Making the turn from the old principles to the new, unknown surroundings makes somewhat uncertain, but my recommendation is: "continue and remain trying".

Have a nice day.

De onvergetelijke leraar - The unforgetable teacher

There are moments where memories of my youth come back, memories from the time that I a was a schoolboy, boring memories during the WWII and the first years after the war. It was a time where I, as a little boy, experienced too many difficulties for my age. I have also good memories, of teachers from the elementary school teachers who have been of tremendous importance to me.

One of those important teachers was master Koudijs who was a teacher in the seventh year of the basic school, he is always the first teacher I remember. This teacher has taught me so much valuable knowledge which I use every day. A teacher who in the first place could tell quite attentive about a subject and could explain difficult things in understandable language. When he was speaking, then everybody was quiet and we listened carefully to what he had to say, we wouldn't miss a word of what he said. It's the truth... in-imaginable these days :-). After the lesson the class got most of the time a task to seek and collect all sorts of knowledge and data in periodicals and newspapers. I remind myself that we had to clip photographs, drawings and pictures to make a compilation of them to finish the story and make it complete. Just by seeking and collecting knowledge by ourself we kept up and learned a lot in this manner. I'm still learning this way and it is still working even now, while I'm in my seventieth year.

I remind myself subjects about the "Uiver", a DC 2 airplane of the KLM that won the race to Melbourne in Australia in 1934, followed by an item about he first transport airplanes that flew in the stratosphere. We learned everything about Easter Island and the strange statues there, which are still a riddle. We collected for instance information about the beautiful cruisers SS "New Amsterdam" and the SS "Rotterdam" of the Holland-America Line.

Master Koudijs told about his own hobby, collecting post stamps. He proudly showed us his particular specimens and told us about the backgrounds of the stamps. Because of these background stories became this hobby so interesting, behind each stamp was a beautiful narration concerning people, places, countries, happenings and so on. And so this teacher has made an incredible impression on me during 1 school year, he is a living memory for more than 60 years now. I wonder who will remember me over so many years :-)

This is it....

I'll make it clear in a few words my friends.

I am going to stop blogging for a while and I don't know for how long, but this is it for now. The main reasons are that I am tired and I have not got any good ideas in the weeks and months behind me. I am going to spend more time on other things. It doesn't mean that I will disappear from the internet. I promise that I will visit the blogs of all known and dear friends and remain in contact by e-mail.

For now I say goodbye and maybe I'll be back some day. I'm sorry..... All the best for everyone.

Schiphol International Airport

Zaterdag, 11 oktober 2008.

Saturday, October 11, 2008. The day began with sunshine as predicted in the weather reports. After hanging around the house for weeks due to the work at our house, the gloomy weather, and a robust cold, was this a marked moment for going out. I realised that it was 10 years ago that I had been on the Schiphol Airport and I thought that today was an excellent occasion to visit the renewed airport. To fly is for many people a most usual affair, because so many travel by air plane to holiday destinations or for business trips. Actually, I didn't fly in the last 10 years.

Year after year we heard about the many expansions on the airport, but I had no idea what I could expect. I took the train to Amsterdam Schiphol, an inconceivable fast connection. From the train you walk into a large hall, where all connections come together. Train platforms, departure-, arrival terminals and many stores and restaurants.

Many beautiful souvenir shops which offered the possibility to photograph people in a 'real cockpit' and where travellers can buy Dutch wooden shoes. Wooden shoes in all sizes and many colours, painted in the original yellow colour as well as in shining red, dark blue and bright Delfts blue.

It was very busy in the arrival hall. People searched tensely for family or friends who came from the customs service and when they found each other many hugs were exchanged.

I came in a totally unknown surroundings when I left the large hall to take a look at the outside of the enormous complex. An enormous open square in front of the building where everything quite calm was, cheered up with this beautiful fall asters (Frieda Ballard, I believe).

At the edge of the square, taxis lined up and were waiting for passengers. Workmen worked hard at the road, therefor large parts of the road had been broken up to make improvements and expansion on the taxi station. A Dutch doughnut booth (Oliebollenkraam) got attention by the colours and especially for the smell of fresh baked doughnuts (oil ball).

Next to the entry of the large hall of the Schiphol complex was a terrace with people who enjoyed the Sun and a cup of coffee or something else to drink. On a different entry I went back into the big hall and found my way to the platforms to take the train to Amsterdam Central Station. It was such a beautiful day and I couldn't resist to take that part of this journey too.

It was amazingly simple to find out where to go for the trains. The indications were clear and everything was so accessible, there was no need to ask the way. You even don't have to walk on particular places. You only have to step on the escalator and you end on the platform, where the train arrived within 10 minutes.

Get in the train and off you go. Three stops further and approximately 18 minutes later the train arrived at the Central Station in Amsterdam. For a change I left the station hall this time at the North side, thus at the side where the river 't IJ is. Also here a lot of building activities, with much broken up roads. All the digging work has something to do with the gigantic project of the North-South line, the underground Subway-connection straight through Amsterdam.

Looking over the water of the river 't IJ then you forget all that mess. The ferries connect Amsterdam-North with the Centre of Amsterdam and they sail continuously the same stretch to bring pedestrians, cyclists and motor bikers from one side to the other. Those crossings are totally free, thus if you want you may sail the whole day for free. :-)

I decided to cross the river and to return. The last time that I went with the ferry over the river 't IJ must have been somewhere in the middle of the '60s. The ferries were somewhat larger and could also transfer cars and motorcycles, but nowadays that type of traffic has been led through tunnels and over bridges around the city.

Passengers enough, within the shortest time sufficient people came on board and of course, a few Amsterdam jokes were exchanged with the crew. Then the ferry started and silently we sailed to the other side of the river, a matter of a few minutes. As soon as the ferry docked and the way was cleared, cyclists and pedestrians ran of the ferry meanwhile people from the other side came on board. This is how it goes every day and the whole day through..... What a job. : -)

Looking back in the direction where we left it was a fascinating view. Nothing reminded me to former times, it seemed to me that everything had been changed, therefor it was tremendously. fascinating.

Toen we voorbij gevaren waren vervolgde zij haar weg.

This passenger boat had to wait for the ferry, because ferries always have priority. When we past her she continued her way.

Back on the spot where we got on board, now everybody left the ferry and the whole ritual started again. Bo......ring :-)

I walked into the Central Station at the back side and walked through the passage to the front of the station. Also there it is still one large construction site with a lot discomfort for pedestrians, traffic and taxis. On this spot there is sometimes a bit irritation between taxi drivers and municipal supervisors, but this time when I stood there it was calm, perhaps because the weather was so beautiful.

Passing the road crossings, direction Rokin and seen from the bridge lie the round trip boat with which I made earlier a round trip and of which I have made a video, you can find it in my video archive in the side bar.

I walked over the Rokin in the direction of the Dam. It was actually very busy and all terraces were occupied. Nothing of financial crises to notice. Everybody did normally their errands or wanted to relax in the sun. Meanwhile I became unbelievable tired and it was time to go home then I turned back to the station and went to the train that would leave from platform 7a. When I came home I considered that this travel perhaps had been just too overconfident because I had not been so tired in times. I needed the whole Sunday to recover from the efforts on this Saturday. I assume age and physical condition now really play a role, meanwhile I remain to make long walks and short train journeys as long as I can.
