Den Haag-Scheveningen Sea-Life

Donderdag 16 juli 2009. Een prachtige dag om iets leuks te gaan doen, de zon deed zijn best om er iets moois van te maken. Ik had nog een keuzedag voor een vrije treinreis te benutten en dit was een goede gelegenheid. En zo vertrok ik naar Scheveningen, eigenlijk Den Haag, om naar `Sea-Life` te gaan en te kijken naar levensvormen onder water, en naar wat zich daar onder water allemaal afspeelt.

Thursday, July 16, 2009. A beautiful day to do something special, the sun did everything to make the best of it. I had a free journey to utilize on my train subscription and this was a good occasion. So I went to Scheveningen, actually The Hague, to `Sea-Life`, to watch forms of life in waters from all over the world, and to see what´s going on under the water surface.



Maar voordat ik naar Scheveningen ging, ben ik eerst met de tram naar het Omniversum gereden om alvast kaartjes te kopen voor een paar voorstellingen volgende week. De IMAX films op dat immens grote projectiescherm vind ik zo geweldig dat ik wel elke week een keer zou willen gaan kijken, maar dat gaat niet vanwege de kosten. Ik kijk dus een paar films, verdeeld over een hele dag. Vanaf het Omniversum moest ik eerst een flink eind lopen om bij een tramhalte te komen die naar Scheveningen rijdt, maar met dat mooie weer was het een fijne wandeling. Uiteindelijk bereikte ik de Scheveningse boulevard waar Sea-Life is gevestigd.

Before I went to Scheveningen, I firstly went to the Omniversum theater by tram to buy tickets for a few movies which I want to see next week. I like the IMAX films on the immensely large projection screen. I would go to that theatre a couple of times a month but that´s not possible because of the expenses.Therefor I watch a few films, divided over a whole day. From the Omniversum I firstly had to walk a long distance to the next tram-stop to go to Scheveningen, but with this beautiful weather it was a nice walk. Finally I reached esplanade of Scheveningen where Sea-Life has been established.

Binnen heerst een beetje geheimzinnige sfeer en kinderen vinden het allemaal reuze spannend, ze vergapen zich voor de grote glazen wanden van de aquariums. Kleine en grote vissen glijden langzaam voorbij om plotseling heel snel weg te schieten naar een andere hoek van het aquarium.

A mysterious atmosphere rules inside the building and children were excited, they stared at the large glass walls of the aquariums, watching the small and big fishes sliding slowly through the water and then... suddenly they shoot quite fast away to a corner or between water-plants in the aquarium.

Heel veel vormen en kleuren zijn er te bewonderen en voor velen is dit de eerste keer om zoveel prachtige dieren van zo dichtbij te bekijken.

There are many shapes and colours to admire and for many children, and also adults, is this the first time to look at so many beautiful animals from such a close distance.

Vanwege het weinige licht in de aquariums, en vaak bordjes met het verzoek om niet te flitsen bij het foto's maken, heb ik een aantal foto's uit de vrije hand gemaakt, maar het resultaat is dan vaak dat de foto's niet echt scherp zijn. Toch druk ik ze maar af in iets kleiner formaat om tocht te laten zien hoe mooi het daar binnen was. Deze mochten wel met flitslicht worden gemaakt.

Because of the low intensity of the lights in the aquariums, and to respect the signs with a request not to use a flashlight when shooting photos, I made a number of photos without using a tripod. As you can imagine was the result disappointing... they are not sharp... Nevertheless I will show them in a smaller format then usual so you can see how beautiful it was inside. Sometimes it was allowed to use a flashlight.

Bijzarre vormen die zich statig tussen de waterplanten voortbewegen, draaiend met hun ogen van links naar rechts en omgekeerd, door hun opvallende vorm en gedragingen juist zo boeiend om naar te kijken.

Bizarre shapes, moving stately between water plants, looking around and turning their eyes. They are so fascinating to look at just because of their behavior and striking forms.

De opstelling van sommige aquaria is ook bijzonder. Eerst kun je de vissen en schildpadden en hun zwemgedrag door de glazen wanden bekijken, en even verderop loopt het gangpad naar boven en kun je het tafereel bekijken vanaf de bovenkant. Één van de vissen op de tweede foto bewoonde een kruik en verdedigde haar woning tegen indringers.

The placing of some aquariums is also particular. Firstly you can look at the behaviour of the fishes and turtles through the glass walls, and a little bit further down the aisle walks there was a small ladder to a higher floor where you can watch the scene from the top. One of the fishes on the second photo inhabited a stone bottle and defended her house against intruders.

Na enkele uren door de halfduistere gangen en ruimtes te hebben gelopen vond ik het tijd worden om even de frisse buitenlucht op te zoeken. Over de boulevard te lopen en kijken of ik een kop koffie kon bemachtigen. Inmiddels was het lekker warm geworden en op het strand, links en rechts van de Scheveningse Pier, lagen al enkele duizenden badgasten. Ondanks de grote aantallen, was er toch voldoende ruimte naar het scheen. Zelf ben ik er niet zo'n liefhebber van om urenlang op zo'n snikheet strand in de zon te liggen gaarbakken. Ik loop liever wat rond en bekijk de mensen vanaf een gepaste afstand, zoals vanaf de Pier.


After a few hours walk through half-dark spaces, it was time for me to go outside in the fresh open air, to walk over the esplanade and to find a place to drink a nice cup of coffee. Meanwhile it became warm and on the left and on the right side of the Scheveningse Pier lay several thousands seaside visitors. Despite the large number of visitors it looked like there was really sufficient space for all of them. I am not such a lover of lying for hours in the sand on a broiling day. I don´t spend my time with laying my body on the BB. I rather walk somewhat around and look at people from an appropriate distance, like from the Pier.

Als je boven op de Pier loopt en over de zijkant naar beneden kijkt, dan heb je een fantastisch uitzicht over het brede strand van Scheveningen. Intussen was ik moe geworden en besloot daarom weer naar huis te gaan, voor vandaag was het weer mooi geweest. Veel gelopen en gezien, dus voldaan weer huis om een verhaaltje daarover op te tekenen voor deze weblog.

When you walk on the upper-deck of the Pier and then have a look over the side to below, then you have a fantastic view over the broad beach of Scheveningen. In the meantime I became tired and decided to go back home, it was enough for today I had walked a lot and I had seen a lot, enough to write a blogpost.

Voordat ik weer in de tram stapte om naar het Centraal Station te rijden, nog even gauw deze foto´s gemaakt van de omgeving, mooie brede straten en bekende gebouwen zoals het Holland Casino en het Kurhaus.
