Sinterklaas weer terug naar Spanje

Ik moet nog een paar dingen verklaren of uitleggen voor een paar mensen.

I have to explain a few things for a couple of Blogfriends.

Sinterklaas

Het Sinterklaasfeest is in de eerste plaats een kinderfeest. Alles rondom het Sinterklaasfeest is gericht op de kleintjes en het is een spannend feest waarbij veel cadeautjes en snoepgoed worden uitgedeeld. De allerkleinsten geloven heilig dat zij alles aan die gulle Sinterklaas kunnen vragen en dat al hun wensjes worden vervuld.


The saint Nicholas celebration is in the first place a party for children. Everything around the saint Nicholas celebration has been directed around the little ones and it is an exciting celebration for them by which many presents and candy are distributed. The children believe saintly that they can ask for everything from that generous saint Nicholas and that all their wishes will be fulfilled.

Enkele weken voor het Sinterklaasfeest mogen de kinderen hun schoentje zetten want dan komen de Pieten daar 's-nachts wat snoepgoed in doen. Vaak doen kinderen van tevoren een wortel voor het paard Americo in hun schoen en zetten een emmer water of een bakje water klaar voor het paard, dan worden ze zeker niet vergeten door de Sint. Heel vroeger toen de mensen nog klompen droegen, stond daar natuurlijk een klomp, maar daar loopt niemand meer op.

A few weeks before the real saint Nicholas celebration, the children are allowed set their shoe, then the Chaps come in at night and put some candy in it. Often the children put a carrot in their shoe for the horse Americo and some offer also a bucket water for the horse, then they will certainly not be forgotten by the Saint. Previously, when people wear wooden shoes then the children used their wooden shoes,but nobody wears them anymore, only farmers do.

Een paar weken later is het zover. Op 5 december zitten vele Nederlanders gezellig binnen bij de kachel (nou ja, bij de centrale verwarming waarschijnlijk). Er wordt gezongen, cadeautjes worden uitgepakt en er wordt lekker veel snoep gegeten.

A few weeks later it is there, 5 December, many Dutch families sit together that evening in front of the stove (nowadays, near the central heating probably). They sing songs, unpack their presents and eat a lot of candy.

Het Sinterklaasfeest is al heel erg oud (net als de Sint trouwens). Toch weet lang niet iedereen alles van de goede Sint. Wist jij bijvoorbeeld dat Sinterklaas eigenlijk helemaal niet uit Spanje komt, maar uit Turkije? En dat de Sint en de Kerstman eigenlijk dezelfde figuren zijn?

The saint Nicholas celebration is very old (and so is the Saint). Not everybody has good knowledge of the good Saint. Do you know for instance that saint Nicholas actually did not come from Spain but from Turkey? And that Saint Nicholas and Santa Claus actually are the same person?

Een Turk, Nicolaas, zoals de Sint vroeger heette, is heel lang geleden geboren in Patara. In het jaar 280 na Christus om precies te zijn. Patara is een plaatsje in Turkije. Eigenlijk is de Sint dus een Turk en geen Spanjaard! Later werd Nicolaas bisschop van de plaats Myra. Na zijn dood vonden de mensen dat hij zulke goede dingen in zijn leven had gedaan dat ze Nicolaas heilig verklaarden. Sindsdien heet hij Sint (=heilige) Nicolaas.

Sint Nicolaas and Santa Claus are the same figures.

A Turk, Nicolaas, as the Saint was named previously, was born in Patara quite long ago. To be precise in the year 280 after Christ. Patara is a place in Turkey. Actually the Saint is a Turk and no Spaniard! Later on Nicolaas became bishop of the place Myra. After his death men found that he had done so much good things in his life and Nicolaas was saintly declared by the Catholic Church. Since then he is called Saint (=Holy) Nicolaas.

Saint Nicolaas and Santa Claus are the same person.

Santa Claus

Eeuwen geleden verhuisden veel Nederlanders naar Amerika. Ze namen ook het Sinterklaasfeest mee. Alleen veranderde dit feest nogal in de loop der jaren... .
Sinterklaas werd Santa Claus. De Sint ging er wat anders uitzien en ook werd de datum waarop de cadeautjes worden gegeven verschoven. Na verloop van tijd gebeurde dit niet meer op 5 december, maar met Kerst.
Zo is een heel nieuwe figuur ontstaan: de kerstman zoals de hij er tegenwoordig uitziet is een creatie van de Coca Cola Company. In Nederland wordt dit feest de laatste jaren ook steeds meer gevierd. Raar genoeg moet Sinterklaas in Nederland dus concurreren met.... zichzelf.

Centuries ago many Dutchmen moved to America. They took also the saint Nicholas celebration with them. Only this celebration changed in the course of years... . Saint Nicholas became Santa Claus. The Saint's clothes and outfit changed and also the date on which presents were given became moved. After time, this happened no longer on December 5, but with Christmas. This way arised a quite new figure. Santa Claus as he looks today is a creation of the Coca Cola Company. In the last 30 - 40 years, Christmas is more and more celebrated in The Netherlands the same way as in many other countries, with Santa Claus and again presents. Oddly enough saint Nicholas in the Netherlands must compete with... himself.

Maar het echte Kerstfeest is toch de viering van de geboorte van Jesus Christus en als ik dan terugdenk aan hoe dat vroeger bij ons werd gevierd, dan heb ik daar heel andere beelden bij. Dan herinner ik mij de Nachtmis in de Kerk, een Kerststal, Kerstliedjes, mooie muziek, en het Kerstverhaal. En de relatie met een Coca Cola-mannetje is dan even lastig te combineren voor mij. Maar goed, Sinterklaas is weer naar Spanje, heeft Amerco op stal gezet. Hij trekt in Spanje nu een ander pak aan om vervolgens naar Rovanimi bij Finland af te reizen. Daar wordt de speelgoedfabriek weer opgestart, Rudolf en de andere rendieren uit de kast gehaald en het feest begint weer opnieuw. Nu geen Sinterklaas cadeaus maar kerstcadeaus. Zet 'm op.

Christmas is in my opinion the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ and when I then think back in time, where I was a child, and thinking of how Christmas previously was celebrated, then I have complete different memories of what I see now. I remember the Midnight Mass in the Church, a Christmas crib, Christmas carols, beautiful music, snow and the Christmas story. And it's just a little bit difficult for me to find the relation with a cute Coca Cola guy. Alright, Saint Nicholas went back to Spain again, has put Americo in the stable. He changed his clothes and his name to Santa Claus, then he traveled off now to Rovanimi nearby Finland. There the toys factory has been started to make more toys and more beautiful presents. Rudolf and the other reindeers came back home and the feast starts over again. This time not Saint Nicholas presents, only Christmas presents from Santa Claus. Ho ho ho....
