25 Februari, de dag dat rond 10:30 uur een vliegtuig van Turkish Arlines neerstorte nabij het vliegveld Schiphol. De trein waarin ik zat, op weg naar Den Haag, reed op dat tijdstip in de omgeving van Haarlem. Natuurlijk hebben wij op dat moment van het ongeval helemaal niets vernomen. Ik hoorde pas bij aankomst in Den Haag wat er was gebeurd en zo'n gebeurtenis die zo dichtbij plaatsvind grijpt je toch aan. Er verschijnen nog steeds berichten in de nieuwsmedia en ik volg het net als iedereen.25 February, the day that around 10:30 AM an air plane of Turkish Airlines crashed nearby Schiphol airport. The train in which I travelled to The Hague was at that moment in the surroundings of Harlem. Of course, nobody in the train had any idea of what happened in that terrible accident a few kilometres from where we were. I heard by arrival in the Hague what happened and such an event, so nearby that tells on you.
There's still news in the media and I follow the news just like everybody does.
Zoals ik vorige week al vertelde, wilde ik graag in het Omniversum de grootbeeldfilm in IMAX-formaat gaan zien over het leven van Vincent van Gogh. In mijn beleving zijn deze grootbeeldfilms telkens een bijzondere gebeurtenis. De projecties op het immense beeldscherm van 840 M² in de halfronde koepel van het Omniversum, wekken de ilusie dat je IN de film zit wanneer het beeld wordt verspreid over 180°. De film over Vincent van Gogh plaatst je midden in zijn schilderijen en je bevind je tussen de fantastische kleuren die je rondom je heen ziet. Het was geweldig om te zien op welke plaatsen Vincent van Gogh precies heeft gestaan en heeft geschilderd. Onbewust gingen mijn gedachten terug naar de jaren 1993 en 1994 toen ik voor het eerst samen met mijn Vader naar dit theater ging. Ik herinner mij hoe hij genoot van de films die toen actueel waren en hoe wij er later over spraken. Deze film zou hij ook geweldig hebben gevonden omdat die zou aansluiten op zijn eigen hobby, schilderen.
Like I told you last week, I was eager to see the IMAX film about the life of Vincent van Gogh on the giant film screen in Omniversum. In my perception are these IMAX movies each time a particular event. The projections on the immense screen of 840 M² in the half-round dome of the Omniversum, creates the illusion that you're IN the film to be a part of it when the images are spread over 180°. The film about Vincent van Gogh places you in the middle of his paintings and you find yourself between the fantastic colours that surround you. It was great to see the spots where Vincent van Gogh precisely stood and painted his marvellous paintings. Unwittingly my thoughts went back to the years 1993 and 1994 where I went for the first time to this theatre together with my Father. I remind me how he enjoyed the movies who were topic in those years and how we talked about it when we came home. He would also have enjoyed this film tremendously because it connected to his own hobby.... paint and pictures.
Na afloop van de eerste film, heb ik na een korte onderbreking en een kop koffie, gekeken naar de tweede film, "Animal Island" of ook wel Surviving Island genoemd. De film verhaalt over de overleving van dieren zoals diverse soorten pinguins, zeeolifanten, pelsrobben en verschillende soorten albatrossen. Dit alles speelde zich af op het eiland South Georgia in Antarctica. Het indrukwekkendst waren vooral de gevechten tussen zeeoliefanten om hun territorium en wijfjes te verdedigen . Toen deze kolossen, van soms meer dan 4000 kilo, bijtend op elkaar inbeukten en het geluid daarbij de beelden versterkten, zag ik de mensen op de rijen naast mij in elkaar duiken en hoorde ik vrouwen gillen. De film geeft een goed beeld van de keiharde werkelijkheid om te overleven onder extreme omstandigheden. De natuur is prachtig, maar is ook meedogenloos als het op overleven aankomt. Ook heel erg indrukwekend is het als je meevliegt in een helicopter, vliegend over onhergzame gebieden. En als je over bergwanden vliegt en plotseling in de diepte onder je kijkt in een afgrond. Je beweegt onwillekeurig mee als de helicopter een bocht maakt naar links of naar rechts, of je grijpt je stoelleuning vast als hij in duikvlucht naar de aarde vliegt. Sensationeel!
After this first film, there was a short interruption and I headed to the coffee corner for a cup of coffee. Then it was time to look at the second film, "Animal Island", also called Surviving Island. This film tells about the survival of animals such as various kinds of penguins, sea elephants, seals and several kinds of albatrosses. Everything was filmed on the island South Georgia in Antarctica. Impressively were the fights between the sea elephants to defend their territory and women. I saw people dive backwards on the rows next to me and I heard women scream, when these colossus, with their weight of more than 4000 kilos were pounding and biting each other. The images were strengthened by the heavy sounds that came out the speakers in the theatre. This film gives a good image how these animals survive in the hard reality and under extreme circumstances. Natures is beautiful, but it is also merciless where it reaches a point to survive. It is also quite impressive to fly in the front seat of a helicopter, flying over inhospitable areas. When flying over mountains and looking over the edge of a mountain, suddenly you look in the depth beneath you in an abyss. That's a real kick. You move involuntary as the helicopter makes a curve to the left or to the right, or you grab your chair as the helicopter makes a dive to the earth. Sensational!
Tenslotte na nog een korte onderbreking ben ik gaan kijken naar de film "Dolphins", een prachtige documentaire over dolfijnen. De opnamen waren gemaakt rond de Bahama's en in Patagonië, Argentinië. Het was op sommige momenten ontroerend om te zien hoe intelligent deze dieren zijn en hoe zij een vriendschapsband kunnen opbouwen met de mens. Ook hier krijg je weer het gevoel dat je je temidden van deze dieren bevindt, je zwemt en speelt mee en soms werd er een ballet opgevoerd door deze dieren. Je bent even in een droomwereld waar alles even mooi lijkt en toch besef je dat overal gevaren schuilen.
Ultimately after yet another short break I saw the third and last film for that day, "Dolphins", a beautiful documentary about the life of dolphins and the question: "can they communicate with people?". The recordings had been made in the surroundings of the Bahama's and in Patagonia, Argentina. On some moments it was moving to see how intelligent these animals are and how they can build up a friendship a with human beings. Also here you get the feeling to swim and play between these animals on certain times they performed a kind of water ballet. You are in a dream world where everything seems to be just fine and at the same time you realize that in the real world you are everywhere surrounded by dangers.
Die paar uur kijken naar prachtige beelden hebben mij goed gedaan. Ik ben weer op plaatsen geweest waar ik nooit van mijn leven zou kunnen komen. Ik heb deze middag intens genoten en alles beleefd alsof het echt was. Thuisgekomen ben ik op de bank geploft en heb verteld hoe mijn dag verlopen was en we hebben er samen nog even fijn over nagepraat.

The few hours I spent looking at those beautiful images was a good time. Now I have been to places where I can not go to during the rest of my life. I enjoyed everything intensively and experienced what happened as if it really happened real. When I came home I plumped down on the bench and told my wife how my day was and we had a nice talk about everything I had seen.
