Omniversum - The Hague

25 February, the day that around 10:30 AM an air plane of Turkish Airlines crashed nearby Schiphol airport. The train in which I travelled to The Hague was at that moment in the surroundings of Harlem. Of course, nobody in the train had any idea of what happened in that terrible accident a few kilometres from where we were. I heard by arrival in the Hague what happened and such an event, so nearby that tells on you.
There's still news in the media and I follow the news just like everybody does.

Like I told you last week, I was eager to see the IMAX film about the life of Vincent van Gogh on the giant film screen in Omniversum. In my perception are these IMAX movies each time a particular event. The projections on the immense screen of 840 M² in the half-round dome of the Omniversum, creates the illusion that you're IN the film to be a part of it when the images are spread over 180°. The film about Vincent van Gogh places you in the middle of his paintings and you find yourself between the fantastic colours that surround you. It was great to see the spots where Vincent van Gogh precisely stood and painted his marvellous paintings. Unwittingly my thoughts went back to the years 1993 and 1994 where I went for the first time to this theatre together with my Father. I remind me how he enjoyed the movies who were topic in those years and how we talked about it when we came home. He would also have enjoyed this film tremendously because it connected to his own hobby.... paint and pictures.

Sensationeel!

After this first film, there was a short interruption and I headed to the coffee corner for a cup of coffee. Then it was time to look at the second film, "Animal Island", also called Surviving Island. This film tells about the survival of animals such as various kinds of penguins, sea elephants, seals and several kinds of albatrosses. Everything was filmed on the island South Georgia in Antarctica. Impressively were the fights between the sea elephants to defend their territory and women. I saw people dive backwards on the rows next to me and I heard women scream, when these colossus, with their weight of more than 4000 kilos were pounding and biting each other. The images were strengthened by the heavy sounds that came out the speakers in the theatre. This film gives a good image how these animals survive in the hard reality and under extreme circumstances. Natures is beautiful, but it is also merciless where it reaches a point to survive. It is also quite impressive to fly in the front seat of a helicopter, flying over inhospitable areas. When flying over mountains and looking over the edge of a mountain, suddenly you look in the depth beneath you in an abyss. That's a real kick. You move involuntary as the helicopter makes a curve to the left or to the right, or you grab your chair as the helicopter makes a dive to the earth. Sensational!

Ultimately after yet another short break I saw the third and last film for that day, "Dolphins", a beautiful documentary about the life of dolphins and the question: "can they communicate with people?". The recordings had been made in the surroundings of the Bahama's and in Patagonia, Argentina. On some moments it was moving to see how intelligent these animals are and how they can build up a friendship a with human beings. Also here you get the feeling to swim and play between these animals on certain times they performed a kind of water ballet. You are in a dream world where everything seems to be just fine and at the same time you realize that in the real world you are everywhere surrounded by dangers.

Fijn weekend toegewenst.

The few hours I spent looking at those beautiful images was a good time. Now I have been to places where I can not go to during the rest of my life. I enjoyed everything intensively and experienced what happened as if it really happened real. When I came home I plumped down on the bench and told my wife how my day was and we had a nice talk about everything I had seen.

Wishing you a good weekend.

Museon Den Haag - Museon The Hague

Last Wednesday I travelled to The Hague with the intention to see the IMAX film "Vincent van Gogh" on the giantic film screen in the cupola of Omniversum The Hague... But that went differently.... I had forgotten the crocus holiday and the result was that the tickets for the early show had been sold off. It seemed to me it was not a good idea to wait for the late afternoon show and not at all in the late evening. At the reservation counter I bought tickets for Wednesday next week, therefore I will travel by train to The Hague once again, but now with certainty that I have reserved the best seat in this miraculous theatre.

For this reason I had to change my plan and I decided to go to the Museon, next building to the Omniversum. The name Museon is an aggregation of the words Museum and education (onderwijs). I had a good time in the Museon. Of course there were a lot children, but also parents, grandparents and ordinary people like me. I discovered that the Museon is a particular museum. Programs are varied and targeted on gathering knowledge, not only for primary education but also for high school students and students who want to become teachers themselves.

The main topic now is up to 31 May " Discover the mysteries of the Deep Sea". Only the title may have a large attraction on children. Many examples are exhibited with short, clear explanations, but the funniest thing for children is that they can play interactively with all kinds of instruments and transfer themselves in an unknown fantasy world.

Examples of deep sea capsules where people, cameras and other apparatus can be brought to the sea floor up to 4 kilometres depth to observe and examine the living under extreme circumstances.

It becomes more exciting when even the smallest children can sit at the desks and play with the devices, screens and knobs to create their own discovery journey. From behind the panel they manoeuvre their capsule to places above the sea floor to discover all kinds of exotic animals which become visible on their screens. I stood there, watching those kids from a distance and it was amazing to see how the children of this time can handle some difficult techniques. What a difference with the things and circumstances I grew up with.

Recently a renewed discussion started between certain population groups concerning the creation of the world and humanity. Christians and Jews believe that God has created the World, humans and all what lives in 6 days and made the 7th day as a rest day. The creation of humans is described in the Torah and in the Bible in Genesis 1:27 - 31. Muslims believe that Allah has created the World and humans, but there is no report in the Qor-aan (Koran) about the duration in time (23: 13-14). And then there is the approach of Darwin in his evolution theory. All these groups have their own truth in which they believe in and they disagree strongly with each other. It becomes more confusing when we realize that each religion is divided in many sub groups and each of those sub groups created their own new truth. We find this phenomenon in the Jewish community, the Christian community and in the Islamic world. So there is enough to discuss or even to kill each other or to start a devastating war. I'll take notice of everything what is offered and take the freedom to build my own opinion on that . : -)

The variety of subjects and activities is almost unlimited. The Museon offers the possibility to make a real discovery excursion through the time. You can acquire knowledge concerning how people lived in Europe thousands of years ago. By means of showcases with archaeology finds, screens on which video pictures are shown, and photos and pictures of the world in which we live now and its history.

The by BBC Wildlife Magazine organized photo competition " Wildlife Photographer of the Year", shows in a particular exhibition a collection exceptional photos, sometimes made under extreme circumstances. Long travels over almost impassable roads, then waiting for days or sometimes weeks to shoot that one and only photo which can make you famous. It is certainly worth to read the inscriptions beside the photos, then you understand the intentions of the photographer better. The winner of 2008 is the American photographer Steve Winter with his splendid photo " Snowstorm Leopard" , taken in the Hemis High Altitude National Park in the Himalayas.

If it now concerns the question what an Andrewsarchus was, or concerning the question for what reason a polar bear does not eat penguins. What we certainly have to know is that there are still billions dinosaurs living around us. The birds we know and see around our houses are straight descendants of them.

Why some birds such as the Dodo, Kiwi and Ostriches stopped flying or, how rock crystal looks and for what it can be used. On all these questions the answer can be found in the Museon.

I have had an instructive and unforgettable afternoon and have amused myself. An experience richer and I concludes this tale with a splendid copy of a cave drawing.

Have a Great Weekend.

Koude Frisse Lucht - Cold Fresh Air

When my head is filled with negative thoughts, then I must go outside to get rid of them. And where can I find a better place then to go to the sea, walking along the beach, on the dike or along the ships in the harbour.

Last Sunday I have been to my cousin in the province Friesland because I had not seen him for a long time. But the annoying side effect is, that I needed the next day much time to rest after the efforts. It sounds excessive, but I was really dog tired and stayed in bed most of the day.

luiden.

This morning I thought " Do not stay at home, go outside and let everything blow off out of your head", and so I did. The wind blows firmly today and it feels cold. Firstly I went to Huisduinen (a village) and parked my car on the dike with a view over the Marsdiep (waterway). A couple small boats ploughed the waves and I saw how the bow-waves splashed into the air. The wind raged around my car and behind me I heard the church bell sound in the village.

I started the motor of my car and drove along the foot of the dike to the port of Den Helder, a spot where I regularly go to when I want to reflect my thoughts. Firstly I had a look at the large sluice which links the port with the North Holland canal and I drove back along the fisherman port. All fisher ships were off the harbour and fishing at least till Friday. I saw a fleet offshore ships (oil branch) in another part of the harbour, but that part had been entirely surrounded by a large fence. The spot where I, as lad in former days, kicked pebbles into the water, is no longer accessible for public and the whole scene has been totally changed, just like the moored ships.

Harbour Office, Den Helder

I have wandered a couple of hours along the ships and in the meantime I became cold. Time to go home to walk the dog.

Excuse me for the delay to publish this post.

De tandarts - The dentist

Smile!.... haha.. aaaah....

I needed two new crowns on the upper right-hand set of my teeth. Therefore the dentist had to remove the original crowns on January 5. Usually there is more to do then just that. During the first visit to the dentist, he made the nerves in the root canals dead, drilled the root canals to make them partly empty, and then he placed temporary stuffing. Fortunately all this happened with a robust local anaesthesia so that I almost did not notice anything. After that I had to "bite" in some tough substance to make a print of the teeth who were left. Now everything was ready for the dental mechanic to make the two new crowns fitting. : -)

The second visit to the dentist was on 16 January, the root canals became once again drilled and some extra preparations were made for placing the new crowns. This intervention was less vehemently then the first time.

And finally on january 19 the new crowns were placed effortlessly. All together It has cost a few pennies but I have no toothache any longer and I have a broader smile when I read Hunter's conversations with Memaw.

Utrecht

Wednesday, January 14, I traveled by train to Utrecht to walk around in the surroundings where my parents lived in this old city. My parents lived in at least 6 different houses. One removal followed by another and those moving parties went on and on..... until a certain point without me.

The photographs I'll show here were all taken in the direct surroundings of the neighbourhood of one particular house in the centre of the city. I keep the best memories of this house in de Lange Nieuwstraat (Long Newstreet). This was the place where the most radical changes in my life took place and this neighbourhood kept always its attraction on me.

My parents lived in the middle of the downtown of Utrecht, a few houses next to the Cathedral and at the end of the street we had a view on the the Dom tower who rises high above the city. I always liked the old city very well, the old houses, the narrow streets and alleys and the canals with its cellars In my imagination I always think back at medieval times from which I learned at school and from books.

At the edge of the old downtown then you see the transition to a later period. Large houses of which can be accepted that they have been inhabited by very wealthy people in the first half of the 19de century. Now these enormous houses have been organized mainly as offices and such things.

I discovered that they actively worked on programs for tidying up the surroundings and cultivating old pawns. Fortunately they are taking care on these beautiful places and it deserves appreciation that there is committed this way maintenance to all those small maisonettes.

Opposite the here shown monumental building at "Lepelenburg" there is a row of small houses that look impressively well. Next to these small houses there is this alley, and I realized that this was previously a very narrow and small place to live in. I saw that the house now became inhabited again!. Presumably by students, but I'm not convinced of that.

On the left side next to the imposing door, there is a plate with this text:

BRUNTENHOF

Along the canals in the old downtown there are everywhere cellars in which trade goods were, and still are, stored. In the past most goods were mainly transported via the canals by boats. This is a view over the "New Canal", that lies at the back side of the street where my parents lived.

And this is the "Old Canal" that lay at the front side, not far from the house where my parents lived. This canal is twice as broad as the other canal and this one is also famous for the cellars in which pubs and small catering businesses are established.

The canals wending through the old part of the city, maintaining the character of old downtown of Utrecht. Here you have a good view on how trade goods were transported over the water on the back side ....

.... and in the narrow shopping streets at the front side, were traded to the public. The stores are still here and do good businesses each day. It remind me that friends of my parents, who lived here, had a bicycle trade in one of these shops.

A view from under the houses of the "Lijnmarkt". It makes me always think of Venice where the houses also are built directly at the waterfront.

Just a little bit further, on the right, the impressing city Hall of Utrecht. Its here where my wife and I got married in December 1957. That is a long time ago.... The hall where the ceremony took place is at the back side of this building, but on the moment that I took these photographs it wasn't accessible, because some activities took place there.

The City Hall, here seen at the front side . Look how the connections of the Old Canal goes under the streets and houses and everywhere cellar spaces.

In the Spring and on summery days, it's a bustling space here, market booths, crowded stores and along the canal packed terraces. In all those years some things has been changed, but the pleasant atmosphere remained.

Film: The Secret Of Roan Inish

Yesterday evening I have seen this great film from the beginning to the end. It is an enchanting fable. The tale takes place on some isolated islands in Ireland and it concerns the secrets around a "Selkie" , half human, half seal and the principal character, a little girl of 10 years old. The grandfather of this little girl, an old islander of Roan Inish, is a great story teller. He tells old tales which find connection in the present time of the film. I am crazy about old Irish stories and Irish music, therefore my evening was great. Here is the trailer of the film and there are still more fragments on Internet concerning this film
I certainly recommend the film and maybe you can watch the film in one part somewhere.
