Delft - Willem, Water, Wijn dagtocht

Foto 1 Stadhuis - Foto 2 Nieuwe Kerk op de Markt

Delft, 29 november 2009, Willem, Water, Wijn Dagtocht.

Delft, 29 November 2009, Willem, Water, Wine day Trip.

It was early in the morning when I drove my car to the railway station. The sun stood quite low just above the horizon and shin with a red glow through a thin layer of clouds. The shadows on the clouds created the illusion that there were high mountains in the distance, at the same time I remembered the saying: "Morning red, brings water in the ditch" (can not translate this better). Sitting in the train I looked through the window and saw the weather gradually changing in a morning with ominous dark clouds and then it began to rain.... I thought that my planned outing literally and figuratively would fall into the water, but fortunately it did not when I look back on that day now.

It was the first time that I travelled to Delft. Of course, we know something about Delftware, the first micro biologist Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, the painter Johannes Vermeer and every Dutchman knows who Hugo de Groot was. In history lessons at school we were taught about Johan van Oldenbarnevelt and Prince Maurits and what role they played in the history of the Netherlands. Most of these stories happened at the end of the 16th century and at the beginning of the 17de century in Delft. Delft is mainly known as the historical city where in "De Prinsenhof" William of Orange was murdered by Balthasar Gerards on July 10, 1584.

From the station in Delft it is a 5 minutes walk to the centre of old downtown. When you have never been in old cities like this one, then it seems you walk into an old painting. Because of the rain there were only a few people in the streets and with a little bit imagination it seemed that time had stood still.

The narrow streets, canals and old houses with beautiful fronts make you think of days in the long past.

After walking one hour in the rain with my thoughts somewhere else back in time I went to the quay to get on board for a round trip through the canals of this old city.

Our captain was a student from the local university and he knew quite a lot about the city. On expert manner he told many details about the houses along the canals and their former inhabitants. There were many facts worth to know about the large number of bridges over the canals. He told all these stories in three languages, Dutch, German and English because the small number passengers consisted of people from those language regions.

During the time that we had to wait for the other passengers there was enough time for shooting a few photos at the outside of the boat. Inside the boat the passengers waited relaxed until the rest of the passengers had also arrived.

One of the characteristics of the Old Church is that the tower is 7° out of balance. The church is also known by the name "Oude Jan (Old John)".

After the canal trip, I went to a café along one of the canals where I stopped for a simple lunch. I got dished up an extensive bread meal with coffee and fresh milk, so much that I could never eat all that food.

Then after the lunch I continued my day trip and went in the direction of the Museum Lambert van Meerten. Underway I saw many of these places in the canals where, in the old days, women did the laundry in the canals.

Lambert van Meerten was a rich industrial and collector of art. In 1892 he ordered to build this beautiful house at the canal. In the house there are, brilliant collections Delftware, glass, porcelain, furniture and paintings. Also fascinating is the interior, the wooden floors, fireplaces, panelling and beautiful woodcarving.

The large clock, the enormous Delftware images on separated tiles, and the old tools.

The bedroom as it was in the old days with cupboard-bed stead, warming-pan and pieces of furniture from the 19de century.

Precious old collections of Delftware displayed in display cases. On the 2nd photograph is next to the display case a screen on which a film was to see how the Delfts blue earthenware became, and still is, made.

On a short distance from the Meertens Museum, lies at the Sint Agahtaplein The Prinsenhof. Here, passing under the gate and directly on the right is the entrance.

In the entrance hall hangs this painting with the image of Willem of Orange, the Father of the Nation as he always has been called.

Walking through the corridor and halls of The Prinsenhof I came at the stairwell where Prince Willem of Orange has been murdered. Of course, it is not a discovery, but in my perception it was a particular place to be there for a while because the original situation has been kept as it was all those years since 1584, and it still remains.

Here I stood...., on the place where three bullets were fired at the Prince and one hit him deadly in the belly. The other two bullets hit the wall in which the bullet holes are still there.

On this stair, Prince Willem of Orange blew his last breath.

Before he died he spoke these last words as a prayer. These words have been painted on the wall in the stairwell.

It was a long story and it was not easy to summarize such a busy day together with photographs and to make it readable for everyone. In the mean time between this day till now I was very busy with other things, but believe me... I'll come back as soon as I can.

Trim, cut and paste....

Santa Claus' Birthday party did not take place yet, but here has been worked hard already to finish the annual "Christmas Cards" in time. Hours in succession and quite concentrated the tiny figures are clipped, cut and glued on coloured cards. I hope people will realize how much time and attention had been stuck into each little card.

These Christmas cards will find their way to several places all over the world and maybe it is nice to look back later to find out if your card already is shown here between the others. :-)

Do we have your postal address?

Twitter - MySpace - Facebook etc......

More and more people are joining these "Social Networks" and so did I. I really put a lot of effort in it to find amusing things in it. But I did not succeed to experience much fun there, honestly, I do not like these networks at all. Perhaps is it my age, I understand that especially younger people have fun with the short lines and remarks but for me it is meaningless. It does not mean anything to me when someone tells in five words that he/she is on his/her way to the train. What can I do with this kind of communication? Or when they returned just from a short holiday. Further nothing, not a word about that holiday itself.... Yes, I think I will close my Twitter-, Facebook-, MySpace- etc. accounts... in any case I am not going to use them any longer, I have better ideas to spend my time : -) By the way.... this is the second time I am closing these accounts :-)

I received this reaction in Facebook and that was the affirmation that I am not the only one with my ideas over these networks.

"I am still with blogger, too. It seems no one hardly blogs anymore. I like it the best because people tell stories, talk about their families, and tell things about their lives. I only go on Facebook to keep in touch with my relatives and friends that I don't see very often. I don't like playing all the games, etc. on Facebook. I don't bother with Twitter and MySpace. So, I guess I will see you on blogger"

And YES, here I am Penny and I agree with you :-)

Another devistating fire

Callantsoog, vrijdag 13 november 2009

Callantsoog, Friday 13 November 2009

Jufo often sleeps next to my feet and it obviously gives her a protected and comforting feeling. The elderly lady became also hard of hearing and now she is expecting from me to watch over her.

It is also nice to rest on a dogs mattress with a peace of the master's garment. She lays her head next to or on top of the garment and is waiting and enjoying the time till I pay attention to her again. It is so nice to be together, but now Jufo became old she can not do the many efforts we were used to, we only can amuse ourselves with simple things. A single contact is often enough to make her eyes sparkle and to let her exuberant bark or to bring one of her tennis balls to me.

On our daily rounds it became clear that the flower bulbs were planted in tight flower beds in the ground.

And then covered with a thick pack of straw to protect the flower bulbs against harmful weather influences. In the Spring next year, everything shoots upwards and again we can enjoy the abundance of the most beautiful colours for a number of weeks .

Callantsoog, vrijdag 14 november 2009

Callantsoog, Friday 14 November 2009

And like every day we went outside for a short walk, but there hung a penetrating smell of fire in the air...

Gelukkig zonder persoonlijke ongelukken.

From a distance I saw smoke rising up from a flower bulb farm at the other side of the fields. When I looked better I saw also a few fire engines and cars of emergency services on the narrow road in front of the barns. A little bit further on the path where we walked I met someone who told me that the fire broke out this morning in one of the barns around 5 o'clock and that possibly asbestos had been released with the fire. Reason enough for me to stay away from that area, so this time no hotographs from nearby. It is sad that so many fires started in the last months.... In Den Helder the Prince Willim, Julianadorp a flower bulb business, in the surroundings of a village called Schoorl 4x a dune fire and now here in Callantsoog again a flower bulb business that has been destroyed in flames. Happily enough without personal misfortunes.

All this happened while I was preparing this blog post, so it is a day later then I planned.

Have a nice day and take care.

Zwanenfamilie

29 juni 2009

29 June 2009
On the outskirts of the village where I live is a large drainage ditch in which the water is drained from the bulb fields. In and at this ditch live many fishes and birds, and on a small territory become also sheep grazed. On this day I saw for the first time that five young swans came out the nest to discover the vicinity of the safe nest under the watchful eye of Dad and Mom Swan.

29 juni 2009

29 June 2009.
I walk every day with my dog Jufo along this spot and Jufo find it quite interesting to meet so many swans together. Occasionally I shoot a few photographs
with my cell phone of these beautiful animals. The whole family consists of Dad and Mom Swan and five young ones. Hissing, and warning with half outstretched wings both parents show that they do not tolerate that we come closer, and that is exactly what we respect.

11 augustus 2009

11 August 2009
The young swans grow day by the day and the distances they swim become longer and longer. Father Swan comes immediately in our direction to make clear not to come closer to his family.

11 augustus 2009

11 August 2009
Meanwhile the man
in front of the group keeps everybody on a safe distance, the wife is watching everything that could come from behind the group and she keeps the group together.

12 augustus 2009

12 August 2009
This is the spot where the nest is and where they return after their discovery tours. It is funny to see that also moor-hens may swim here together with the young swans.

31 augustus 2009

31 August 2009
Now we are two months further and the parents are still watching over and caring for their young ones. The young swans grew enormously and are already covered with beautiful white feathers. Their beaks are still grey coloured and that makes clear that they are young.

23 oktober 2009

23 October 2009
On the fields are straw bales waiting. They are meant to cover the bulbs on the fields for the coming winter. As soon as the bulbs are planted into the ground they are covered with a lot of straw to protect them against frost and other weather influences. Against this background, I saw today the remains of the swans family leaving these waters. I don't know what happened but I missed the father of the family and also two young swans but the mother was leaving with three young ones in the direction of the woods at the other side of our village. That's how life goes....
